He'd had a busy day at work. Not difficult or particurally gruelling. Just busy. At one point, there was a four hour wait in the ER. And of course he ended up staying on long after his shift was supposed to end. Not like he could leave when they were so backed up ( Read more... )

He quickened his step until they were nearer each other. Stopping then, he held out his arms to her. "Aren't you a sight for sore eyes? It's wonderful to see you."

She hugged him.

"You too," she responded conversationally, before pausing. There wasn't much she could think of to say.

Already he can sense something is not quite right with her. He doesn't want to ask right away, knowing she will tell him if she wants to. Or he'll eventually start to pry until he convinces her to tell him.

"How are you?" he asks, his tone casual and friendly. And maybe just a little bit concerned.
