we have been debating this *a lot* in Uni this year...

The conclusion I've drawn is that - they say they take our gender, sexual orientation and religion in order to make sure that we suffer no discrimination based on these three things BUT surely the best way not to discriminate (and to hire the best person for the job) is to not ask these details and base the person hired on merit alone?
