Well, I must say that I enjoy the controversial new Nissan ad. They could've done a better job with the accent and the vocabulary, but I found it pretty cute nonetheless. I'm puzzled by some people's outrage...I really don't think the ad is offensive in the least, let alone "demeaning", as one blogger said. But then, Newfoundlanders are always ( Read more... )

Your link was the first time i saw that..We talked about it in one of my classes the other day, and a few people from Bona Vista said that they had no problem with the commercial, they thought it was cute.. the problem they had was that they got the bona vista accent wrong?

i think the ad is super cute. the first time i saw it i laughed so hard. i don't think they totally hit the nail on the head with the vocab/accent, as you said, but it was good nonetheless. i also take big issue with some people thinking it's offensive. if you look a 80% of newfoundland popular culture you find that we're contantly using our accents to sell albums or get rating or make money (ie. buddy wasisname; great big sea; hatching, matching and dispatching) and then it's never an issue (exept perhaps with HM&D, but then the controversy wasn't about use of language, but more about how newfoundlanders were "portrayed"). anyway, i think it's a bit hypocritcal for it to be acceptable on one hand and unaceptable on the other. but hey, that's just me :)
