I will just give this warning that I'm mostly a fan of TNG and the later series (I even liked ENT). My partner is mostly TOS because that is what he grew up on. It took him about 15 years to be able to accept the Klingons from TNG as being part of the same species as those from TOS because of the make-up ( ... )

I'm looking forward to seeing it. I've been intrigued by TOS for awhile (mainly, I'm curious as to what about Kirk and Spock made them the first big slash pairing), but after watching a couple of episodes from the first season, I gave up. This from an original trilogy Star Wars fan, but...argh, I couldn't get past how dated it was!

But, I love TNG and like the other shows, and I'd like to get interested enough in TOS to watch it for the characters without wanting to bang my head against the wall at the effects. So, the new film may well be enough for me to say, "Oh, hey, these are people I'd like to find out more about!"

...But if I do end up loving the movie, I promise not to tell you. ;)

Having never been into Kirk/Spock, I can't tell you that, despite having every episode and movie memorized. I can tell you why Spock/McCoy is awesome, however. I can say that I get so absorbed in the episodes I don't often notice how dated they are, and even when I do notice, it's usually for laughs. In one episode, you can see puppet strings and it amuses me to no end. The writing has always done it for me, and the writing was excellent.

I hope the new movie does that, although a warning from everything I've heard - these characters are different. Spock is far more emotional, for one thing.

Thank you for that; being shielded from it at first, and then slowly getting used to the fan reaction might save my sanity yet.

I wish this weren't finals, and I say that because this emotional attachment combined with exams can't be good for my blood pressure.
