because socializing medicine is a scary thought, especially when you have big medical problems and don't want to be treated like cattle on a ranch that makes you get paperwork to get your own teats sucked.
Anarchism is only cool when you get to stab someone with something rusty, shit would get exhausting after awhile...though, it could be refreshing.
Democrats are silly, idealistic, and protest with pink crowns. Who wants to be associated with that? Then again...who wouldn't?
I can't answer for others but for me it means a more constituational lack of government intervention in my life. This encompasses the social and economic sphere

i think anyone who affiliates with any one party is an asshole (no offense).
medias are fabulous in their art of fabrication of education. all sides fall prey to it.
no one side is as honest as id like it to be, therefore i care not for any of them. when i come across one that accepts political postions as jobs and not 3rd grade contests of who has the bigger cleaner penis and who is more popular, i might change my mind.
i like to look at political resumes rather than the he said she said crap. what did this candidate get accomplished, what good did they do...then look at the bad and weigh it out...no one is ever going to be a political god, not in this life time and the people who would be, wouldnt ever run on principles alone.
I think Libertarianism appeals to a lot of people who have left wing tendencies, but don’t want - or know how - to think in a community-oriented way. That’s how you end up with suburban hippies, internet trolls, and business yuppies all on the same page. Just because someone believes in gender rights or other forms of social equality, that doesn’t mean that they will see the flaws of unregulated capitalism or have a problem with consumerism.
I don’t know if you remember the Mallet Assembly at UA, but I think that organization - which has spawn a few Libertarian candidates over the years - is a good representation of Libertarianism appeal. It is a self-governed dorm full of intelligent people who lived by the drug-addled virtues of “lifestyle anarchism” as opposed to anything more constructive. On some issues, their experiment seemed to work. On others, they wasted a lot of creative potential.
i've found in the south a lot of people who are in a liberal scene, but don't want to be chastised for their republican leaning, will say they are libertarian. These people usually don't fully know what a libertarian believes any way, and are probably hoping the punk that asked doesn't know enough to challenge them either. it's colored my view of libertarianism.
