In a better place, in a better time.
Show night again last Thursday. This time it was Flogging Molly and the Rock Against Bush Tour. Go go Gadget Counterculture!
The funniest part of the show was the fact that after the support bands (The Briggs and The Street Dogs, both of whom we missed almost entirely.) played, they put up a big screen and Jello Biafra's DVD'ed torso introduced two film montages. He looks pretty good.
The first was Will Ferrell as GW Bush filming a campaign commercial. Funny as hell. Everyone was fairly entertained.
The second was a collage of quotes from the Bush administration touting WMD's in Iraq. Topical, yes. Advisable, no. I really can't think of why they would do this at a Flogging Molly show in Georgia. First, this is Georgia. So heavily conservative we can't even stand a flag that doesn't have a Confederate battle emblem on it. Second, those people who aren't conservative are going to be annoyed by the propagandizing, and may vote for Bush out of spite. Third, this is a Flogging Molly show. Every third guy there is some meathead who happens to have an Irish last name and a taste for Guinness, to go along with his crew cut and raging Red, White, and Blue balls.
On the other side, what the fuck do these idiots expect from the Rock Against Bush Tour? A balanced criticism of the strengths and weaknesses of the current administration? Jesus, grow the fuck up. Oooh, you don't like what Jello has to say? Guess what chucko--you paid for him to say it. You have supported Fat Mike and company simply by purchasing your ticket. Remember the very hurtful boycott you laid on the French but not buying...uh...something French, I'm sure. Well, you forget that some Americans agreed with the French. Nice consistency, dipshit.
In any case, the show was great and connie (who wasn't really a fan before) thought they were fantastic. Our favorite was the guy who played the mandolin and banjo. Have you ever seen a mandolin played like a rock 'n' roll instrument? No, you haven't. But this guy does. He was way cool. Also, it was one of the few shows I've been to lately where I was below the median age for an audience member.
I actually have some more to say, but it will have to wait for later.
