Ah, I see. Oh wow. How did I miss that? To be fair, after The Revolutionary war, when Congress and Washington was setting up the new government. Someone told Washington to just become King because it was too hard to set up the democracy. Washington didn't much like that idea.
I wish I had a link for you for that. But I'm paraphrasing from a history book I had at one point in my life.

We're also only a constitutional monarchy, that means the Queen really has very little power (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitutional_monarchy).
A Dictator is rather terrifying.
