A few years back, I was at a club fair thing at one of the schools I failed out of. The whole lobby of the student union was crammed with tables for different groups, passing out literature and recruiting impressionable young freshman. You know, there seemed to be a little chess-playing park there in "Long Island City" down the block from that big liquor store. I know because I sat there for a while watching people.

ever see the movie "Searching for Bobby Fisher?" great movie (1993) about chess with Laurence Fishburne as the hip cool chess guy from the park. go down to Washington Square Park sometime and you'll see. . .

something similar happened to me in HS when i tried to join the Luxumbergian Freestyle Knitting Society.
