you know how i got amanda to stop biting hers? i threatened the loss of something she loves very dearly. i'm sure liz loves you enough to threaten to lose control and shatter your toenails with a tack. control is a very good motivator :)
I think another way to approach the problem might be like meditation. By practicing awareness you can catch your habits. A harsh or very negative reaction can be distracting or discouraging.
