Time for a rant

Feb 03, 2010 22:51

I had ANOTHER Doctor's appointment today, with my pulmonologist of all people, and we got into over whether or not to medicate my mild depression.  The more I think about our discussion the more pissed I get, so behind the cut is the rant, read on at your own risk.

Oh and all the chemo made my tinnitus worse. imgine have your teeth cleaned by one of those ultrasonic picks the dental hygenists are using now, and that is what I hear 24/7/365. Yet one more reason for having trouble sleeping.

I hadn't known how little support you were getting from them. That's ... awful.

And you still want my job? Wow.

[all the hugs I can get you]

Yes, I still want the job. It is doing things I enjoy and keeps me busy.

Honestly, I don't think I am that out of the ordinary. Most cancer patients, at lest of the rarer types, have trouble getting support. There were only 8000 cases of testicular cancer in the US in 2008. hard for us to find each other. Even the big ones, breast and prostate, have their support organizations separate from the Doctors.

Oh, Bro, your rant is *so* valid. gafferbear February 4 2010, 06:32:19 UTC

Thanks Bro.

But I do have to note that my insurance wasn't really the issue. They paid out over $152,198 for me this year and I only had to pay a bit over $4,000. Unfortunately, that was money that wasn't in the budget.

I guess my gripe boils down to they treated the cancer, but not me.

I guess my gripe boils down to they treated the cancer, but not me.

Then yell at them about that. And if they respond, "Well, what do you want us to do?", tell them that they need to figure that out. This is the first time you have gone through something like this, but they (theoretically) have had other people go through it, and you want ANSWERS. They are supposed to know what is going on -- they just need a wake-up call (well, maybe a rant) that they are only doing half the job. Get them to do the other half, or get them to find you someone else who will do it.

Good luck! My thoughts *are* with you.

I can completely sympathize and understand your furstration, both at the lack of soulcare and the desire of modern medicine to cure everything with a pill. Both perspectives are wrong headed and come from a fundimental belief by many doctors, especially surgeons, that they are only treating the body in the same way as you would repair a car. They are not referred to as "cutters" and "butchers" by their medical associates just for their skills with slicing you up, but rather for their attitudes as well.

I fired one of Cas's surgeons when she was only 15 months old. When you're going to cut my kid, I do research... lots of research. This woman was not even close to current practice and I forced the military to send us off base to do the surgery.

BTW, this isn't meant to add fuel to the fire/pain, but it really sounds like you need to get laid. And that helps raise testosterone too.

I am so sympathetic. Really. When I was in hospital after having Beekman, I was embarassedly trying to explain to the doctor that I was not suffering from post-natal depression, I was depressive and dealing with the psycho medical establishment up to the time of the birth -- plus my family situation-- had put me at wits end; but now that I had my baby in my arms, my hips were going back to normal position, they had given me pain meds and said I could eat like a real human, I was MUCH BETTER NOW.)

(There's a certain strain of medical thought that says giving anti-depressants for situational depression is helpful because it supposedly helps you handle the stupid situation. Sometimes I go along with this, mostly when I'm saying "I take my drugs so I don't smack all the stupid people who really deserve it.")
