Writer's Block: School Ties (but, more importantly, a wave and hug of welcome)... :D

Firstly, my answer to QOTD, hands down, is this: ENGLISH, WITH A SIDE OF HEAVY CREATIVE WRITING. ;) (The original two-part question was "What was/is your college major? And do you use it in your current job or career?" though.)

As for whether or not I use it in my career? I should say say so! :D As we speak, I'm in the midst of writing my first ( Read more... )

majors, sherlock holmes, writer's block, college ruined me, new friends

I have a show to recommend you because it's based on a short story by Elmore Leonard and he's a consultant to this day. It's called "Justified," the first two seasons are out on DVD and we're currently 3 episodes into season 3, Tuesdays at 10PM on FX.

It's ridiculously good stuff because of the writing. (The lead *points to icon* doesn't suck either!)

Hey Maria! :)

I have loved Tim-O (my nickname for him) ever since I saw him in The Perfect Getaway AND in Dreamcatcher before that (even if he did die far too soon for my tastes in the latter of those two - - I wish the final two had been TIM AND DAMIEN, NOT Thomas and Damien, as I love Damien Lewis and Tim-O, but I don't really care for Thomas at all, actorly-wise or otherwise).

So, I have indeed actually already seen Justified and lurve it quite a lot, if in a roundabout way. I'm just not TOO particularly fannish about it yet. But, thanks for the heads' up at any rate. :) *hugs*

And I agree with you. The writing IS quite top-notch, but Elmore Leonard's stuff (even his short story stuff) is almost always great! So, I really had no reservations or negative thoughts about THAT. :D In fact, I've loved HIS work ever since grade school. :) What's YOUR fave Leonard work, besides Justifed? ;)

Ugh, bureaucracies. So your choice was either stay at pretentious college and get an actual ~*creative writing*~ degree, or go to diverse university and settle with generic English degree (unless you went the grad school route to finish up something that you'd unofficially accomplished years before, without a really expensive piece of paper stating that you had achieved this). I think I would have went with option B, as well. ♥

And, yes, YOU & RDJ are BOTH tres adorable! :D So, your apt (and awesome) icon iz apt (and awesome). :D Although...is that what the sign that he's holding ACTUALLY says? :S ~your buddy, your pal, Sharma

I don't think we have a Creative Writing degree, either? I know we have degrees in English, Western Lit, and some other form of Lit, but I haven't much heard a word about Creative Writing. I think there might be concentrations?

Though, I guess does it make too much of a difference? Cause we don't have a technical biochem degree offered, only a concentration in biochem through the chem department, but it'll just read as a degree in chem for the most part.

Interesting tidbits, Ken. :) Thanks for the info. :) Unfortunately, they don't really offer a creative writing concentration here, like they do for biochem. THAT coulld be because writing is not a science though, and sciences tend to differ (read: vary) greatly even if they're on the same major branch of science (be it biology, chemisty, physics, or earth science), and then the various disciplines or subsciences that reside on each of the four larger branches.
