I don't quite get this. A perfectly respectable young person (male or female) goes to college. These are A/B students that never did anything overly deviant in their high school days. These young people go to nice little colleges with nice little sports teams and a nice little mascot. What they discover there surely does not boggle their mind; ( Read more... )

College and Other Hazards of Growing Up anonymous July 27 2006, 10:52:22 UTC
For most "kids", college is their first taste of freedom - and all of them (to some extent or another) will engage in some behaviors that would not have been allowed while living with their parents and the restrictive rules that they imposed since childhood. Some people become addicted to alcohol, others to video games, Internet porn, chia pets, etc. In general, the ones who grow out of it within a couple of years will leave college mature and ready to start a career (I suppose they get it out of their system). The ones who don't grow out of it, won't mature - or, at the very least, not for a long time ( ... )

Your new theory is that you failed out of school because you didn't drink enough? You think that if you had joined a frat you would still be in school? I dont think so. I dont really think in your heart of hearts you wanted to stay at UMBC. I really tried to help you get your stuff together that last semester and you resisted me every step of the way. I dont know whats happened recently to make you so down on yourself, but I will remind you again, like I always do, that you have real friends that care about you, that want to see you happy and see you suceeded, friends whose lives arent ruined but made better when you are around. These friendships matter much more that those of drunken frat boys. Success starts with one person and one person alone. I dont get the good grades for sitting on my ass all day. We are all here for you, and if you want to come back and really give it a go, we'll help you. If not, thats fine to. Just do what makes you happy, and do it in a way that makes you feel good about yourself.

It was sarcasm, Amber. Thanks for the kind words, and I know I have friends that want me to succeed and all that. I get down from time to time, you should be used to it now. In fact, I get my best ideas when I'm not depressed, but do my best writing when I am. Chances are, if I post something here, I'm feeling kind of blue.

And I have no desire to join a frat. Ever. I thought about it for about a day, and said screw it.

Yo dude. I got your sarcasm about this, but think about this - if you HAD been drunk all the time, don't you think you've had a helluva lot more fun failing out? lol.

Anyways, I hope all is well. As always, lemme know if there's anything I can do for ya.
