An old-favorite TV show and serendipity

Ever find yourself craving some old favorite TV series you haven't seen for years and years? I'm probably dating myself a bit, but back in 1981..83, I had a love/hate relationship with the "Greatest American Hero" tv show.

The basis of the show was an odd mix of Spy, SF, and comic-book themes, with a smattering of humor. It only lasted three seasons. It started out pretty good but the writers started to run out of ways to keep it fun about half way thru the 2nd season. It slowly devolved into predictability (followed by a brief period of outright stupidity) before the network yanked it. But, while it was still good, it was my favorite TV show.

I hadn't thought about it much for at least 20 years but, about two years ago, I started to develop a serious craving to see some of the better episodes again. I rummaged thru my old video-tape collection, but the VHS copies I found that I had taped back then were not really watchable any more. I scanned for it using TiVo, but it wasn't in reruns anywhere I could find. I checked the web but it hadn't been released on DVD. (As you might expect, all this just made the craving worse.)

Flash forward two years to last Saturday. Jeanne and I are shopping at a local Sam Goody's (CDs, DVDs, and video-gaming stuff if you're not familiar with the chain) going-out-of-business sale to see if there was anything we wanted to grab. We had been shopping for about 10 minutes when she came back from where she had been looking at TV-show DVD collections and said "Is this that series you were talking about?". There in her hand was the complete season 2 of GAH on DVD. (I had mentioned my wanting to find GAH in reruns to Jeanne, but I hadn't expected anything like this.) After I managed to get my jaw off the floor, I told her how pleased I was to see them, but that I had mixed feelings about season 2 and wished they had season 1. She dragged me back over to the TV section where, after some searching, we were only able to find two more boxes on the shelf with the GAH logo on the box. One box each of season 1 and season 3...

I had in front of me, a complete three-season set of "Greatest American Hero". DVDs that until that moment, I was fairly sure didn't exist. These three boxes were the ONLY Greatest American Hero DVDs remaining at that store. These DVDs were "30% off". AND to top it all off, Jeanne had a Sam Goody's gift-certificate she wanted me to help her use-up before the store was history.

Sometimes opportunity knocks ... sometimes it uses a wrecking-ball...

I haven't started watching them yet, but I have plans for next weekend.... :)

Anyone else have a similar "old-favorite" show you haven't seen in ages?
