There was a feature on the news tonight about a woman whose precious little dog was killed by a coyote in her yard. Another family in the same neighborhood lost a cat. It's tragic and I feel terribly sorry for people when this happens, BUT they interviewed the (former) dog owner, and she said, "The city needs to come out here and do something about ( Read more... )

I'm in a suburban area, but it backs up to hills. Cats are known as coyote candy out here.

Coyotes are exactly why we made the decision to keep the boys strictly indoors. There was a huge coyote and feral dog problem when we were in California, and little animals were always going missing.

My aunt's also lost a dog and a cat to coyotes, up in Washington. Yeah, it was heartbreaking, but she also knows that she lives out in BFE on 40 acres of overgrown brush land. What else would one expect to find out there? Unicorns?

As horrible as I feel for those that lost there pets...*headdesk*

Besides wildlife, there's the whole thing with cars too. Especially if your yard isn't fenced for your dog.

ITA! We lost a cat to coyotes in CA. We were warned and for the eighteen months we lived there, we made sure the cats were in at dark EVERY NIGHT, but about two weeks before we moved back to FL, we couldn't get Kimba in. My dad got so frustrated, he threw a shoe at him. About 3AM, we hear him wailing around the house, coyotes in full pursuit. My parents went winging out and they all left. The next morning my Dad and I tracked little pieces of white fur to through 100 acres of brush to where there was a neat little pile of it. We cried a lot, but we never blamed the coyotes. I think my dad will feel guilty about getting frustrated for the rest of his life, and that was 1979.

Yeah, or maybe she could just build a fence! It's really her own responsibility to protect her dog outside the house.
