There's a front page article in the weekend paper about the terrible struggles that remote aboriginal communities have with alcohol and other drugs, domestic violence and sexual abuse. There's now a move to impose pretty radical rules on these communities (curfews, banning alcohol sales, removing children from parents, etc) in the hope of curbing ( Read more... )

"Smacking"is so ineffectual(& generally results in a converse effect,it creates&perpetuates more of the "unwanted"behaviour),i find it's more about a loss of control/temper of the adult then a useful teaching technique..how backwards and archaic that that's what's being proposed in an already floundering community.:(

I heard part of Judy Butters' interview with Liam Bartlett yesterday morning and I think that the particular article you're referring to was composed of quite a few "sensationalist" ideas, inaccurately reported (what a surprise). I was glad to hear the story firsthand from the source; it really clarified what was actually being suggested by the people at the coalface.
