I had an old mountain bike, a GT Tequesta, but it kinda sucked for riding around town, which is pretty much all I do on a bike these days. Not to mention, it was from 1997 or so, where they hadn't yet come up with things like suspension

Thing about bike parts is that unless you're dealing in very high end gear, quality declines over time. The parts you'd get stock on a $500 bike 10 years ago are probably a lot more sturdy than the parts you'd get stock on a $500 bike today. Used bikes actually end up being a really good deal. As of four years ago when I got out of biking, people were buying up old bikes just to get reasonably-priced parts that wouldn't break in a month. There's still good stuff being made, but you can easily spend $1000-2000 to get it.

I know what you mean. There was a definite difference in how smooth the shifting was on the old bike, versus what this bike feels like. That said, I'm not going to be hitting a street bike nearly as hard as a mountain bike.

While I was in there browsing around, I pawed over some of the newer mountain bikes, and an _entry level_ mountain bike (full susp, disc brakes) from a brand name manufacturer runs into the $1200 range. Most expensive bike I saw was about $5500. More than my damn Suzuki is worth.
