Got a call from Chase Visa today. They wanted to know if I made a $3.49 purchase today. Seemed like a very small amount of money to trigger an alarm, so I asked if the merchant in question was one they'd had problems with. Sure enough. Mastercard pushed a new card on me a few months back even without that prelude. Just a surprise package in the mail. At that time I logged all the merchants that have my account number on file. A significant number. EZ-Pass had me logged as a scofflaw for a while, but that's because I had never registered my new license plate (new state) with them. It never was an issue until I tried to add to my balance with a canceled card.

In case you didn't know, people who have stolen ID information will first try a small purchase to see if the information has been reported. If it goest through the escalate.

That is why the question the small purchases.
