The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman

This is very much a Neil Gaiman story: It's quite readable, tells an interesting story, and contains references to all sorts of things, some of which I can place. It's inspired by The Jungle Book (which, unfortunately, I haven't read), only transformed so as to take place in a graveyard instead of the jungle. ( Read more... )

I read this recently and very much enjoyed it. For future parenting reference, does the transition to recognizing "my kids aren't ready for this yet" require a conscious mental shift, or does it come naturally?

Also, on a completely unrelated note, I've had problems connecting to Oasis lately (on the very rare occasions that I've had internet access since getting to Alma), and it looks like forwarding to my backup accounts has been similarly sporadic. If Oasis has issues, I figure sending you email there won't accomplish much, but this channel seems to be working. You can send news to me at any of my other various addresses if there's anything I can do to help get things working (my sjensen account at jsd.claremont.edu is still active for now).

For me, the question of whether Peter is ready for something is largely a matter of having read lots of stories to him, and dealt with lots of questions. He went through a phase where he'd identify random female characters as the mommy of the protagonist. That hasn't been long enough ago that I feel comfortable with another orphan sort of story yet.

Oh, and yes, we had network trouble twice recently. Once that was probably DHCP-related (I'm not really that interested in reproducing it...), and another due to a power outage. I should really just finish up our server transition, but I sort of need an 8-hour chunk of time to make significant progress, and I haven't had it.

we'd be happy to loan you the Jungle Book if you're interested. Our compilation also includes Stalky & Co, which is also a Classic. (and Kim, and Captains Courageous, but if you're going to pick one to add, I think Stalky's the most educational)

I'd appreciate that at some point. Maybe postponed until Peter's ready for it.
