I was listening to NPR the other day. They had a bunch of child and CASA advocates on the radio, discussing the seeming spike in Indiana child abuse cases. Every one of them said that it's actually a positive sign, because child abuse rates, as far as every study can tell, stay about the same. The increase is in our ability to detect and report, so in a strange way, rising numbers are a good thing.

In short: The rate is probably the same. If anyone thinks it seems like it's more, it's because of the media coverage. And granted, people should. Because the rates we see in the media still aren't the rates at which it really occurs, even though they are not on the rise.
