I'm not on aim a lot either so I usually do the same when I'm on, unless John is on. I think since I'm out of the habit, everyone else is out of the habit of talking to me. Anyway, my screen name is goo goo doll kev.
I'm the same way.. I was gone for awhile and everyone moves on. we've both been around for so long that no one gets excited about us anymore. you used to seem inaccessible to me.. now I feel safe to message you and get excited about it.
I didn't get any free rides regardless of what some people would tell you.. no one gave me a piggyback ride and it's satisfying to watch other people kick and claw and fight their way up. If you haven't worked 16 hour days then you don't deserve to be famous. You sound extremely bitter... in a way I feel guilty because I still have this feeling that you might have read my post the wrong way. I don't think anyone's got an easy way in this business, whether it be bands starting out in shitty practice rooms, or dancers in their studios, or even the kids on TV. You go through showcases or castings or auditions or interviews or all of the above. You have to work hard to get your foot in the door, and you have to work even harder once things start to rock and roll, because otherwise you get kicked off way quicker than most people would think

I wasn't thinking about your post at all when I wrote that. I really did like what you had to say on it and if people make the point that music and stardom seem to get cheaper with every reality show then I'd probably agree with them. I'm not offended because i don't associate what you were talking about with what I've done. Our success wasn't overnight and it wasn't determined by a studio audience any more than anyone's success is, and we lasted longer than anyone thought we would, and I can look back on it now with a wisdom that i couldn't six months ago.. if i sound bitter it's probably because I do know now more than ever that what you said in some parts of your post is right. The audience is fickle and has a narrow view of things.. they don't see beyond their own TV screen and they don't see beyond what they want to buy at the moment.. a bigger and bigger number of people don't seem to think that if you can get up and sing a good version of a song everyone knows then you're good. people might laugh to hear me say things like this
