I hadn't even heard about this program. You can get a $3500-$4500 rebate for turning in an old car for a new one with better mileage?

The car has to have been registered and insured under your name for the last year. So you can't sell it. Also, the money they thought would last for 12 weeks was burned through in one week. They have done an emergency authorization to fund it for a little while longer, but if they completely reauthorize another round of funding for it, it looks like they'll push the mileage requirement up a little bit.

Also, your clunker has to get mileage below a certain threshold.

18 mpg, average, and I think they changed the methodology a bit? I know the numbers they had used to be ridiculous, but I stopped paying attention to testing methodology a while ago.

And, I think it was trying to be an environmental as well as a stimulus. *shrug*
