Actually, as a registered republican, to see McCain's own campaign finance reform laws being used against him and costing him the presidency is sweet, sweet irony.

I can see the irony, but hopefully it's still objectionable even if there is that element there. Especially as it's gonna affect more than McCain -- even if he loses, he's at least got to do reasonably well to reflect well on all the people running for Congress. If he doesn't, the Democrats are going to have a bigger coattail effect than usual and they'll take Congress by storm. Additionally, it would be terrible if we developed a tradition of lawyers trying to systematically cripple the opposing side before the election is even had. It's bad enough that it's scandal-tastic without resorting to what basically amounts to cheating.

Lawyers have wedged themselves into every single aspect of our lives over the past decade or two. If they got involved in campaign destruction, it would not surprise me one bit.

And on a side note about this election, I really think this election is not nearly as important as '04 simply because of the recession this economy is going to be in by the time the new president is sworn in. And none of these candidates come off as very strong when it comes to economic issues.

Presidents in general aren't very strong when it comes to economic issues. They like to pretend they are, but it's not true. Clinton wants to take credit for the Dot Com boom, but not the Dot Com bust. Bush wants to take credit for record home ownership, but not the housing bubble burst. In reality the Federal Reserve seems to have more direct effect on both booms and both busts, and the President just kind of shuffled around looking important because the public was going to blame them for anything anyway. Notwithstanding "it's the economy stupid" as a rule of political maneuvering, the importance of the election is more importantly in areas other than the economy that the President has more direct influence over, like foreign policy, immigration, and social security reform.
