I wonder why that's the one signpost - so to speak - that you stuck with.

It took me years to put mine up. There was some resistance I couldn't get past. Not about being Jewish. I got Jew Pride by the barrel load. I think some inner child of holocaust-survivor impulse kept me from making it easier for the next batch of Nazis to find me.

Then one day I decided to get defiant on their asses and just do it.

As a child, my mom used to tell me not to wear my Jewish star necklace out in view on an airplane because Nazis and terrorists might see it and take me hostage/kill me first. And people wonder where our neuroses come from.

I know!

It actually happened to my parents. And it just never ever occured to them that it wouldn't happen again. Soon.

If they'd just stuck to stuff like putting good locks on doors and not being conspicuous in potentially dangerous situations, that would have been obsessive, but understandable. Sadly, they approached all of life the same way. I was raised to be paranoid about everything. I guess you were too.
