Little uproar over Miss USA calling herself a geek... from geeks, of course, who are offended that their unique and beautiful snowflake subculture is being trespassed against by pretty people, because it was those people who made their lives hell in high school and HOW DARE THEY ( Read more... )

Plus, we have no idea whether Miss USA was nice or mean to the geeks in her high school. Hating someone simply because they sorta look like Libbies is just plain stupid.

Sounds familiar to me. It's one of the things I've complained about when the people who go to conventions are mocked or teased by the so-called cool people who are sports fans and do the same thing.

It's a double standard.

Y'know, I never thought about it that way!

Until I was in my 30s, I prided myself on being a non-conformist ("just like all my friends") and hated when someone who didn't fit MY stereotyped claimed ownership of something I liked. Whether that was progrock fans or geekiness, it really bugged me. I must've outgrown it, though, because now I don't care. Call yourself whatever you want - but don't judge me because I don't dress, look, or like a stereotypical 40-year old. Yeah, I listen to the "new rock" radio station and avoid the classic rock one, so what? You'll take my army green, 15-year old cargo pants when you pry them off of my cold, dead body.
