He laughed. He danced. He sang. He made uncomfortable conversation. He did everything he was supposed to, all with a smile on his face. But as soon as the cameras were off and the attention was lifted off of him, Jonghyun's heart sunk. He couldn't force the smile anymore, couldn't force himself to be chipper and content with the situation.
Jinki found him sitting by himself in their dressing room. He placed a comforting hand on his shoulder and spoke softly. "He'll be back soon, don't worry."
Jonghyun knew the words were true. Of course he knew they were true and he continuously reminded himself of them so that he could get through the days. But how was it, as he and the three other members of SHINee sat in the back of a van on their way back home, he felt a sharp pain in his chest? How could he reassure himself it was fine, he would be back soon, when he found himself laughing by himself at observations he knew the other would have found amusing, too?
The other members sensed his plunging mood.
"Have you tried texting him" Taemin suggested, sending sad eyes at his hyung.
Jonghyun stared at the younger teen, annoyed.
Taemin shrunk back in his seat. "Sorry hyung, I forgot he turns off his phone while he's on vacation."
Jonghyun was so desperate for his company he could almost cry. But he kept it together for the rest of the group and instead ignored Taemin's reminder of just how disconnected he felt.
Minho remained quietly watching, a knowing look in his large gaze.
"I wonder why he does that," Taemin mused aloud softly," It's like he doesn't want to talk to us."
With a growl of frustration, Jonghyun barked at Taemin to shut up. Like he wasn't feeling insecure enough! Jonghyun tried to disappear in his corner of the van so he could brood alone.
"What did I do wrong?" Taemin whispered to his leader, mad at himself for upsetting his friend.
Jinki patted the maknae's knee. "Nothing," he said," Jonghyun's just love sick is all."
With a backwards glance at the shadowed face of his hyung, Taemin shivered. "I hope I never fall in love, then," he commented in all seriousness.
Jinki chuckled under his breath, because he knew in only a matter of time Taemin would be in the exact same spot as Jonghyun.
As soon as they got to their apartment, Jonghyun was shuffling up the stairs as quickly as he could. All he wanted to do was get in his bed and pull the covers over his head while blasting his favorite R&B tracks. Maybe then he could get a few hours of sleep in.
He opened the door to the apartment, the last one to enter despite his resolve to disappear under his comforter as quickly as possible, and a sharp yelp sounded from the bathroom. Jinki was immediately outside the door and Jonghyun stepped up beside him.
"Minho, are you okay?" Jinki questioned worriedly, ears trained for an answer from the other side of the closed door.
After a few moments, the rapper cleared his throat and spoke," Yeah, yeah, sorry hyung. Just, uh ... slipped is all."
"Okay, be more careful," Jinki said with a shrug, leaving the front of the bathroom to make a snack before bed.
Jonghyun began to drag himself towards bed, but Minho silently appeared from the bathroom at his side.
"You should brush your teeth first," he said, biting down on his bottom lip.
With a raised eyebrow, Jonghyun nodded and followed Minho's advice. He waited for Minho to enter their bedroom before turning to go into the bathroom. He did all of this cautiously, afraid the tall boy had set up some kind of prank. Poking his head into the bathroom first, Jonghyun couldn't see anything suspicious. He took a few uneasy steps onto the tiled floor to see if anything would jump out at him.
Nothing.
With more confident steps, Jonghyun went the rest of the way into the bathroom. Minho was just being weird, possibly from lack of sleep? Shaking his head, Jonghyun reached out to pull his toothbrush from where it was attached to the mirror.
Just as his finger tips curled around the handle of the tooth brush, Jonghyun caught movement out of the corner of his eye. Before he had time to react, someone was jumping out at him from behind the shower curtain.
Jonghyun's first reaction? To scream at the top of his lungs. His second reaction? Punch whatever was coming at him.
"Oh my god, Jjong! That really hurt!"
As his senses returned to him, Jonghyun took in the sight of the one and only Kim Kibum sitting on the toilet seat cover, holding onto his shoulder.
A large grin found its way to Jonghyun's lips. "Kibum!" he cried and with lightening quick movements had the sulking teen in a deathly tight hug. "You're back!"
"Ah, Jonghyun, you're crushing me!" Kibum whined, but returned the hug with just as much force.
Laughing, Jonghyun pulled away from Kibum to take in his appearance. "I missed you!" he said," Why didn't you call? I would have prepared something if I had known."
Smirking, Kibum turned to the bathroom mirror to do a quick touch up on his bangs as he spoke," I wanted to surprise you. Although, I have to say," And he moved his gaze in the mirror to the reflected image of Jonghyun," I was expecting a better reaction."
Jonghyun wrapped his arms around Kibum's waist while resting his chin on the shoulder he hadn't punched. "Sorry, honey," he said with his best sweet smile in place.
Instinctively reaching over to fix Jonghyun's mess of hair, Kibum rolled his eyes. "I don't know if sorry will cut it," he said at the thought of his throbbing shoulder, "You need to stop lifting so much."
Jonghyun nuzzled against Kibum's neck, enjoying the smell of his expensive cologne. "I have to be a manly oppa for the fans," he said cheekily.
Kibum opened his mouth to reply, but was stopped as the SHINee leader came rushing down the hallway.
"I heard yelling! Did someone trip again?" Coming to a halt outside of the bathroom door, Jinki sucked in a deep breath." Oh. You're back."
Kibum's eyes immediately fell on the brightly colored, fluffy and absurdly comfortable robe wrapped around the older teen. "Jinki, what are you doing in my robe?" he asked sharply.
Stuttering for an answer, Jinki stared down at the floor and shrugged. "You never let me wear it and it's so comfy, and you weren't supposed to be back yet ... “
With a sigh, Kibum removed his hand for Jonghyun's hair and outstretched it towards Jinki. "I'll forgive you this one time," he said with patience he rarely showed," Now hand it over."
Scratching the back of his head, Jinki made sure to keep his eyes averted from Kibum. "Well, you'll have to wait a second," he then looked up with a large, goofy grin plastered on his face.
"Hyung," Kibum forced himself to be polite," Are you trying to tell me you're wearing my robe without anything on underneath?"
Jinki laughed nervously in response. If it weren't for the hold Jonghyun kept around his waist, Kibum would have tackled Jinki that moment. As it was, Kibum still attempted to reach out and strangle the singer.
Taking that as his cue to leave, Jinki took off in the direction of their bedroom.
"Let go of me, Jonghyun!" Kibum yelled, still trying to get free of his hold," I can't let him get away with that!"
Jonghyun continued to keep him locked by his arms, all the while laughing loudly.
"Why are you laughing?" Kibum asked exasperatedly," Jinki is so disgusting!"
Shaking his head, Jonghyun simply answered, “I’m glad you're back home."
