This is an embarrassingly long post about Shin Sekyung. The purpose of this is mostly so that everyone loves her too, and so that maybe someone will help me row my sinking ship in the dead sea, because Jonghyun and Sekyung together are - wait, were, I am so not over it, you guys - actually the cutest.
SHIN SEKYUNG
I think the best way to understand Sekyung is to start with her image. She is known as a "bagel girl," or a girl with a good body and a baby face, and is known for being kind-hearted, pure, and beautiful. She hit puberty in first grade, and as a result, she's always had a mature appearance, but she's also become extremely mature, mentally, from a very young age. She's very thoughtful, down-to-earth, and sensible; Kim Tae Woo complimented her on Happy Together, saying that she had a lot of soul.
She's pressured by her image, but I think she doesn't worry about it, per se, especially because her image is still rather unformed. She's confused by her image, because she doesn't see herself as entirely being the "sweet, glamorous girl" and said once that she "like[s] being called smart better than being called innocent or sexy." She is very humble, and is very grateful for the love she receives; she thinks of herself as lucky for the experiences and positive reception she has had. With regards to being called a "natural beauty," though, she said, "No matter how many times you hear it, it always feels good; it's something you're never tired of hearing." At a fanmeeting, she expressed happiness at being able to see her fans, although she wasn't able to do anything for them.
Overall, she is a careful person, trying not necessarily to cultivate an image of perfection, but developing herself to become a better person, and to be more worthy of the praise she receives. In order to be a better actor, as well, she emphasises personal development and experience; she said, "I want first to have life experiences rather than act." Although she debuted as a child actor and model, she resumed normal life in high school in order to gain such valuable experiences. I like this quote from her:
The most valuable thing I learned from ["Blue Salt"] was that acting is something you need to experience yourself. You’re the only one that can pull out something creative within yourself, and you can’t ever purchase something like that for money.
She is also meticulous to a point; she is concerned with her health and takes care of her body well. She is very thorough about skincare, and stretches her entire body before sleeping. She brushes her teeth immediately after eating or drinking, even on set; when given a healthy, bitter drink as punishment on Happy Together, she drank it without complaint or reaction, saying that it was like medicine. When asked about her fashion, she said, "I'm all for being warm and comfortable."
In that vein, and sort of contrary to it, she eats really well, and it's sort of hilarious. She doesn't appear to diet; while at a restaurant for a Running Man mission, she asks for cola, but is immediately affronted by the unfairly expensive price. On the same show, she also mentions ice cream and 미숫가루, a traditional, nutritional drink that is supposedly also a popular diet food for women; and eats a shrimp with the tail because the tail has nutritional value. She also drinks coffee and alcohol.
She takes her work seriously, and always puts her best effort forward. As an only child, she is very independent, and has a very strong sense of self. She very much believes in the idea that you get as much out of something as you put in; in an interview, she said, "I feel like I didn't really have a grip on anything last year, but this year, I'm going to be more proactive." She can be objective about herself, pointing out good and bad qualities about herself, but always with humility: "I don't want to look too far into the future. I just want to take the opportunities that I'm given and give my best effort in everything that I do. […] I will never be satisfied with my acting skills."
She respects the people she works with and around deeply. She is very respectful in general, speaking and acting politely, to the point of where it is nearly excessive or unnecessary when doing things like expressing gratitude. When a tourist in Hawaii asked to take her picture, she thanked him in English several times, and when she and her Running Man teammates were supposed to take turns thanking a store owner, she continuously bowed and thanked her. She thanked the PDs and staff whenever they completed a mission, as well.
She has a very caring heart, and often displays it in messages to fans, such as "Everyone, eat breakfast." She visited Park Seung Il, who has ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), in the hospital, and, while in Incheon for filming, discreetly visited resident shelters to deliver rice and comfort citizens affected by a North Korean shelling. Her agency revealed that she had been worrying during filming and decided to go without telling anyone, but the act was later revealed by fans. She also said, "Before I turn 40, I want to go around the world and work to help those who are not living a comfortable life like others." She can be sensitive, and during puberty, she once cried when she saw her father filet a fish.
She has strong ideas on right and wrong; when she witnesses cheating by competing teams on Running Man, she speaks out immediately, saying things like, "That's seriously not right," and "How can you do things like that?" in a forthright way, although she is embarrassed by her outbursts when they cause others to laugh. This isn't to say she won't bend the rules - more that she thinks it's unfair because it is a competition; when she got stuck in the Dole Pineapple Plantation maze, she ducked through the hedges, and eventually copied someone else's answers because she was too tired to continue. She is a very straight-foward and frank person, though, and on variety shows appears to speak or act without thinking because she's so excited.
She's competitive and driven; she wants to do well, no matter what the task at hand is, and as such can be zealous, taking initiative if not the lead. While initially shy, when comfortable, she becomes bright and lively, and she can become very outgoing and excitable if the mood is similar. Overall, she's a positive person, and playful.
She's also described herself as mercurial in her emotions. Her gestures and body language often reveal her feelings - covering her face and laughing when she's embarrassed, looking out the car window when feeling awkward - and she said that her face especially is an open book.
She is very attentive and reactive to the people around her, and as she stated herself, good at acting as the mood-maker, although she more often shows her shy or sweet side. Her humour is very odd, though; she often reacts almost excessively, laughing to herself before a real punchline and finding normal statements humourous. When an interviewer told her she was ranked number one actress born in 1990 to shine in 2011, she reacted with surprise, but readily admitted a moment later that she'd already heard about it through her mother. In another interview, if asked if she'd been in a relationship before, she replied, "Well, it would be a lie if I said I never had one…I haven't had one." On Running Man, when Gwangsoo discovers that she tricked him for a mission, he stands up, affronted, but she merely scoots over to sit in his chair, for no reason.
Her gestures and physical reactions are also often very childish and silly. She confessed that she acts more cute now, like a high school student, in order to maintain a youthful image, but she can actually be quite child-like. She sways around, and when happy, skips around. She uses a lot of gestures, such as clapping once, or swinging her arms. While her mother was speaking to the camera, she kept playing with her mother's bracelet, took it off, and put it on her own wrist, then returned it. She appears to be afraid of insects and bugs, and she screams when scared, excited, or startled. She likes saying, "Let's go!" or "출발!" a lot.
She keeps in contact with her non-celebrity friends, and is also close to co-actors and actresses such as Moon Geun Young, as well as idols such as BoA and Sooyoung of Girls' Generation. When she travelled to Hawaii for "It's Real," she brought her non-celebrity friends and her mother with her.
She is close to her mother, stating that, "My mom and I fight often. We fight all the time, but that's why we're like friends. She's so interested in my private life. She asks me what I said to my friends after we've been on the phone." She likes holding hands with her mother, and she did a surprise dance performance for her mother in Hawaii. She keeps old pictures of her mother (as a young woman) in her wallet. Other miscellaneous family facts: She lives in southern Samsungdong, in Seoul, I believe on her own. Her father and mother have a ten-year age difference and were not able to conceive for a few years.
In 2010, she revealed her boyfriend, who was a high school student and younger than her. She described him in an interview, saying, "Although my boyfriend is young, he is very understanding of my job as an actress and has a very deep heart. He even consented to my bed scene in the movie 'Ogamdo.'" She broke up with him as late as June 2010, and her agency revealed that they decided to remain close friends.
In terms of ideals, she stated that she once liked Kim Nam Gil. She said, "I like Optimus Prime in 'Transformers' now, because of his warm humanity. I am not loving the robot, but I am loving his heart." Because of this, a fan once wore an Optimus Prime mask to a fanmeet, and she told him she was his fan. From Wikipedia: "[Optimus Prime] is depicted as a brave, powerful, wise and compassionate leader who puts his talent to use improving the universe around him. Optimus is portrayed as having a strong sense of justice and righteousness and has dedicated himself to the protection of all life, particularly the inhabitants of Earth."
In a lot of ways, she is a typical Leo: she's generous and warm, independent and confident, and ambitious. She doesn't like being alone, and as such has expressed wanting three children because she was lonely as an only child. She likes children a lot. She is charming and charismatic, and as a result, people will do as she asks; when she was supposed to complete a giant pancake eating challenge on her own, she roped the restaurant chefs, PDs, and staff (hers and the restaurant's) into helping her. Overall, she has a personality that invites friendliness and warmth, and returns it. She's also described herself as a typical blood type B, the characteristics of which are: easy-going, practical, thorough, goal-oriented, individualistic, optimistic, creative.
She has a number of diverse interests, which is a large part of why I adore her; she has a desire to try and learn just about anything, from cooking to a Hawaiian dance. She has a motorcycle licence after learning to ride one for her role in "Blue Salt," and she drove an ATV in Hawaii, although I'm not sure if she has a normal automobile licence.
She speaks English very well, having learned for at least three years; her conversational English is strong and doesn't have too much of an accent. She's written an
English poem before. In high school, while she was on a hiatus from work and acting, she wrote short stories, although she only showed her writing to her friends. She recently spends her free time reading novels, and brings books with her when she travels.

She sings as well, and was once
a vocal trainee under Sidus HQ. She participated in the OST for "Blue Salt" and a musical stage on
Infinity Challenge. She sang a song, "
Snow is Melting," as part of a project album called the Love Tree Project, to contribute funding for children in hospitals. She also plays the piano.
She sang the song "Dangerous confession of a Broccoli" for her role in Acoustic, where she acted as a singer-songwriter.

58Star Date
2010,
2011 JONGHYUN IN RELATIONSHIPS
Jonghyun is very attentive and sensitive to others. He will perform a number of small gestures to show his affection - in the photos of Jonghyun and Sekyung's date, he held her bag and her coat, held her cellphone to her ear while she spoke on the phone, and put his arm around her. It was also revealed that "when people passed by while they were walking, he would bend over to protect her." He is naturally doting, and Sekyung enjoys mutual caring in her relationships.
That said, though, he is unlikely to be too overbearing; all of his friendships tend to lean towards people who have a strong sense of self, and Sekyung is no exception. While he likes to make small gestures and help others, he is unlikely to go so far as to treat others as incapable of being independent.
He is also very loyal; on Sukira, Leeteuk joked that rather than liking girl groups, he liked one girl, hinting at Sekyung, and before and during their relationship, Jonghyun consistently mentioned her as his ideal. In addition to Sekyung, he has mentioned Olivia Hussey as his ideal type, and Sekyung has been called the Korean Olivia Hussey. He is on his phone constantly and will call or text often, especially when unable to meet up in person.
He would find Sekyung's oddness as perhaps contrary to expectation but a trait to cherish. He is very bright and engaging, and admires people openly; he thinks highly of people who dedicate themselves to what they love and enjoy. He shares his joy and passion for music with others as well, and on their publicised date, they shared earphones to listen to music together. They both also enjoy reading and writing.
I'm going to quote
myself here: He is a giver, and constantly makes gestures of support and adoration towards those he is close to - like the sensitivity he displays for social situations, he intuitively fills spaces in people, and finds relationships rewarding because of the way he can affect people positively. He's committed to his relationships, putting in a significant amount of time and effort to get to know people well and expecting the same from others - he appreciates regular contact and interaction, and strongly values deep and meaningful relationships.
He likely doesn't have a clear plan for the future beyond his dreams of becoming a composer; he tends to take things as they come, and has only recently appeared to consider the possibility of marriage. While his dating experience is limited to Shin Sekyung and rumours of another girlfriend pre-debut, he is still quite level-headed and sensible about his romantic relationships. He stated before that an ideal type is just an ideal, and that he likes girls with a distinct personality.
JONGHYUN AND SEKYUNG
After meeting for the first time during Dream Concert in 2010, they met again coincidentally through a mutual friend; through such meetings, they became close due to similar "ideas and hobbies," as well as a shared understanding and struggle with young idol life - they are both, for example, shy about appearing on variety shows.
They have a lot of cute surface similarities: They both enjoy casual physical intimacy with the people they are close to, and are rather complacent and docile about being touched - when Sekyung's friend fixes her hair for her, she doesn't react at all; Jonghyun lets his members drag him around and bully him. Both of them mysteriously don't seem to understand or realise how cute they are. They both enjoy feeding people, although Jonghyun leans toward feeding people and Sekyung leans toward eating. They both are also close to and/or friendly with the staff around them, and interact with them often. When drunk, Sekyung is happy, talks a lot, and has a lot of charm and aegyo; and if the fanaccount of Jonghyun drunk is to be believed, Jonghyun is the same. They both are close to their family, and their mother in particular. Sekyung also once
tweeted a picture of a corgi. This is important, it is a sign!
They are both shy, but Jonghyun will show initiative in getting to know others, and they both enjoy companionship. At the same time, they're both relatively independent, vivacious, and easy-going, able to enjoy each other's company without feeling pressured.
Both of them, though, tend to be sensitive, although they tend to hide this part of themselves, and as such, both of them were hurt by the negative reaction to the news of their relationship. Although Jonghyun received more hate than Sekyung, he was supported by his members and his fans, notably at a Taiwan fan party. Sekyung, on the other hand, was sheltered from public view, and would have been worried and hurt by the reaction - she had always been viewed favourably by the public prior to the "scandal"; even though T.O.P. once kissed her for a CF, and she revealed another boyfriend in the past, the reaction in both instances was mild. Jonghyun, who is protective of others, would have been upset by and apologetic for her hurt as well.
However, they both enjoy life to the fullest and live in the present, making the best out of unfortunate circumstances and staying optimistic. Although they don't always do things perfectly, they do things with charm. Neither of them have much in the way of a "public persona" or "image," nor do they hide their feelings or thoughts. They both are ambitious and as such would support each other in pursuing their goals and furthering their career; they also find enjoyment in a variety of things, and enjoy having new experiences - travelling, for example. Both of them are prone to silly outbursts and Jonghyun loves making people happy and making them laugh, and Sekyung does already laugh a lot naturally.
They continued dating and separated because they became too busy to see each other. After their relationship ended, Jonghyun mentioned in an interview in London that his ideal type was changing slightly, but his description, although slightly different in nature, still plausibly describes a girl like Sekyung, and according to her company, they remain friends.
