counttheplanes asked for a Jonghyun & Jonghyun post, so here it is! I'm so pleased to be writing this, no one has any idea how long I was like, "they should be friends ; w ;" before they actually started interacting, and now there's enough for me to be writing a massive post about it. DEVOTED TO MUSIC

I think of him as a gentle, down-to-earth, and humble boy who receives a lot of strength from his passion and his relationships; the less-seen (or less-recognised, perhaps) side of him is happy, playful, and boisterous, mostly around friends, and likes to joke around. I think Kim Jonghyun is a little bit the opposite: his stage persona and the way he is in front of others is active, fun, and excitable, and it's harder for people to see his thoughtful, serious, and sincere side except through the way he expresses music or talks about his dreams and thoughts. I do think Lee Jonghyun is more private, and Kim Jonghyun, for a variety of reasons - his openness, his longer career as a Korean idol - is less so. But they're both very well-mannered, cheerful, and kind.

I don't know how he is this person and this person also, but I guess that's why/how he and Kim Jonghyun are friends ㅎ~ㅎ I just added some more to the post since you reminded me that I forgot to write a paragraph about how strange he is; I'm pasting it here so you don't have to search this entire post for it:
He likes to lounge around in his underwear and sleeps in his underwear; he simultaneously likes Hello Kitty and Tekken, as if that's supposed to make sense. He can't eat a lot of foods, laughs really loudly, and apparently still lies around like this singing when he's ill. He loves taking selcas, used to be an ulzzang, and thinks he looks best when he's freshly out of a shower; he also likes using the word "peverted" (unsure if the point is to be hypocritical, or...).
And yes, he uses it to fans and to his members as well, l o l like Jungshin was describing how he'd interact with his future girlfriend and Jonghyun was like, "That's perverted!" Some other similarities I forgot to add earlier: Lee Jonghyun also doesn't like ball ( ... )

But Jonghyun laughed the hardest. He fell forward, backward, sideways… till his flour white face turned to red.
crying what on earth.

LMAO his ulzzang past omg. but he's like a seven year old boy/old man/beautiful person all at once. (no lie, that video of him warming up startled my cat from his sleep L O L. aiieeeeehee~~ aiiiiieeeeehh~~~ LJH you owe him an apology!!)

omg you are a blessed creature!! can u hope that LJH attends the next Idol Sports Day so he and jjong can sit on the sidelines and be weird/cute/sweet/perfect together and kshawols can take three dozen HD fancams of it all ;~~~~~;

I really enjoyed this post! I felt it helped me learn a lot more about Lee Jonghyun and CNBLUE. CNBLUE has always been one of those groups I really liked but never actually got to know because I couldn't find it a lot about them or I didn't have the time to. But this post and all those links you posted will certainly help. :3

Anyway I think this has actually made me appreciate their friendship beyond just an "oh that's nice". There's so much I couldn't possibly comment on it all but I agree that your writing is really lovely and thoughtful! I actually really like the layout too.

I would actually like to see Onew & Jonghyun post because they're my two favorite members of SHINee (...and the only members relevant to me I'm a terrible SHINee fan I know ;w;) and I'm curious about what's your take on them. Especially in light of all the speculation and rumors about them lately like they're not that close anymore and how Onew seems more distant from the rest of SHINee and so on.

yeah, part of the reason why I say they're more like a Japanese (rock) band is because most of the information on them comes out of magazine interviews rather than variety show appearances, &c. In the first few years it was really hard finding information on them because nothing was translated, but there's so much out there now and they really are so cute and sweet and hardworking, all of them ; u ;

and thank you! tbh I'm wary about talking about Onew and Jonghyun's relationship in a post because it's really all just speculation - there's nothing I can say that I think can really be objective or substantiated by "fact." I did sort of talk about it here with a friend, although it was a while ago and things have changed a bit. I think Onew's behaviour is mostly just a culmination of his personally being unsuited to idol life and having a lot of difficulty in Japan (he's been crying really hard at the Japan Arena Tour concerts, when normally he tries to hide his tears/cry offstage ( ... )

I think I have to go catch up with CNBLUE then! Tbh the only one I really know about is Yonghwa because he's my favorite and has had the most activities and stuff. But yes all do seem really sweet from what I've seen. :3

I just really wanted to hear you take on it since you're much more thoughtful and informed about SHINee than I am. But either way this was interesting. So much has been overblown by fans and there's so much rampant speculation so I'm not sure what to believe. And wow I had never heard that Jonghyun and Onew had grown distant. :o

I was so happy when I saw that Onew and Jonghyun did a duet though! I love their duets ; w ; Everyone once in a while I'll watch one and then spend the next hour or so looking up more lol.

Please do! I don't know anyone who's properly into them, it's so sad ; w ;

Sorry :( but there's been so much speculation I'm just tired of it all; I already feel like I've talked the point to death and pretty much put up with all I can bear and I am so ready to let it go. It's all up to interpretation and I'm pretty heavily biased, not just because Jonghyun is my favourite by a mile, but because it's been so frustrating watching Onew be the way he has been, and his fans have been pretty insufferable in the way that they've shifted the blame onto the other members, the staff, the company, pretty much everyone but Onew, when honestly I don't even see it as an issue of who is "at fault" or "to blame." Like attacking Jonghyun simply because he was the one who told the press that Onew had an ankle injury (because clearly he lied and spearheaded the whole conspiracy), starting a petition because they didn't like Onew's hair (obviously an example of gross negligence and bullying from stylists), &c. Like, can you just accept that he is a ( ... )

I've just stumbled upon this community and am greedily devouring everything! I've often felt Jonghyun is one of the most misunderstood idols (e.g. why does everyone think he's dumb? Boy reads Kafka, Poe, Brecht - come on!) so this community is super interesting to me. One thing in particular though: you mention about their families and I was just wondering about that, because I've always been curious about Jonghyun's relationship - or lack of - with his father. To be honest, I got the (completely uninformed) impression he came from a single parent household. I've read things about his father not approving of his pursuing music etc., but the fact that he has never, to my knowledge, mentioned his father or thanked him like he frequently does his mother and sister, who he is obviously incredibly close to, especially in light of the overwhelmingly patriarchal dynamics in S. Korea, suggests to me more than a simple distance. It broke my heart watching his teary shout-out to his mother in the SM movie. And whereas the other members all ( ... )

Yeah, I mean, he made a joke about the Gestalt phenomenon? He isn't really showy about his intelligence, and ironically, that humility has led to the prevailing notion that he's empty-headed. I think everything he downplays ends up ignored and people pick up on his jokes and playful exaggerations as indications of his actual character, so he's cocky and a fool, when he's really not.

In re: his family, he hasn't mentioned his father much, and I think this Chin Chin radio mention, where he says his father is a triathlete, is about it. But the thing about patriarchal societies is that children in general won't be close to the father, because the father is an authority figure and while he's meant to be admired and emulated, particularly by male children, it's not necessarily an intimate relationship - it's a relationship that demands respect, discipline and filial piety/obedience more than anything. Most male idols will mention their mothers or their parents, but very rarely do they mention their father specifically and in a positive ( ... )

Thank you. It's very interesting, especially since in my own case my father and I are more like best friends than parent-child - I find the idea of that formal a relationship to be sort of terrifying! I can't imagine not being able to verbally abuse him on a daily basis!

One of the reasons I'm enjoying Jonghyun having twitter so much is because I think it's introduced more people to how hilarious and clever he can be. I've always felt sort of defensive on his behalf him because - in certain communities anyway - he seems to get a lot of stick, whether it's that his voice is overrated or that, like you said, he's cocky. But you don't have to be a massive fan to realise where his stage persona ends so I'm constantly bewildered by how many people just don't see it. However, since he's started tweeting, it seems to have opened people's eyes a little, so...yay! Plus his constant trolling of Minho is glorious.

In retrospect I might have worded it a little too harshly - I just wanted to point out that a patriarchal family structure doesn't automatically equate to being close to one's father (and on the contrary to what you alluded to in the first comment, I think Korea and Korean men place a lot of emphasis on the mother) but it doesn't mean that one can't be, at all. The idea of filial piety extends to the mother as well, and Jonghyun is obviously very close to his mother, but you'll notice he doesn't actually joke about her - the respect of a child toward their parents is just as, if not more, strong as love. I do think that in the father-son relationship there's a lot more potential for it to be formal or rigid, particularly because parenting norms and gender roles are very different in Asian societies in general, but that doesn't mean it always is in actual practise ( ... )
