baby don't cry

I'm having a rather sentimental day, so I wanted to start a discussion on how we all came to like SHINee and our respective favourite members (although we're here, it doesn't have to be Jonghyun, of course)!

et moi )

type: discussion, group: shinee

characteristics of jjong stans: sentimentality (´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥`)

I feel like I talk about my origin story with SHINee often, but I don't know why; it's really boring. SNSD was my gateway into kpop in the summer of 2010. I think the first time I probably clapped my eyes on SHINee was one of the idol specials of Star Golden Bell where they were guests alongside SNSD (090815) but they didn't make an impression on me. I remember thinking Jonghyun was the token normal-looking one though (not normal as in average-looking; normal as in... looking like a normal person and not so idol-tastically groomed lol). Also, this was back when I didn't know better than to avoid omona, so as I trawled around on there I'd see them mentioned a fair amount. But I didn't pay attention to them until I saw the Lucifer dance practice vid. I thought it was so rad, then, recalling that omona would always mention SHINee when they talked about good live performers, I skipped the MV (in retrospect: good job self lol) and looked up a live performance. Oh, yes, I remember one of the prevailing omona "facts" at the time when I was just getting into them was that they never made mistakes - in that one show where Key was talking about how he inhaled smoke, missed passing back Taemin's microphone, &c. there were comments like "omg almighty key makes/admits to making mistakes?!" (This was before people called him a diva omg I can't even imagine anymore)

I don't really recall what I watched/liked particularly in the earlier days, but I loved their Vogue shoot with Seohyun and their SBS Juliette Acoustic/Ring Ding Dong Remix Gayo performance that year. I love all of SHINee's remixes so much, they're all so good ; o ;

Lucifer feels like (and I guess is) such a long time ago now! I remember staying up ("staying up," as I was in Asia) waiting for the MV and literally when I was about to give up and go to bed when it came out and I had literally explosive feelings because even though I didn't like Jonghyun's styling I just wanted to cry about how pointy (lol) and beautiful his face was in

lol omg. It was a simpler time back then.

OH THAT SHOOT! I loved it too. I think I spammed it once on my lj lol. I thought they all looked so beautiful, especially Seohyun, even if the hats were a bit much. huhuhuhu the Juliette acoustic is so perfect it hurts huhuhuhuhu

his face was so lean and angular during Lucifer * ^ * too bad about that awful fried hair omg.

I usually have a thing for main vocals, because they're the ones who love singing, who are clearly idols because they love singing, and want to do nothing else. Like how Tiffany talks about how she's not even sure if she could do anything else for a living (she could, but okay FINE Tiffany) and Jonghyun has always loved music (bb playing bass! smh that he wasn't main singer) and he's always singing off-stage even if there's a camera, just to himself, because it's his passion. and I'm so proud of him for his composition, whether it's just lyrics or more, because he works hard and I'm excited to see more stuff from him in the future. uh. and he just has an amazing voice, obviously, but it's like you can't touch it, it's pure gold. The Lucifer note still has me dumbstruck sometimes. Oh great I just talked about talent for a paragraph, I didn't even get into his personality. HE IS THE SWEETEST we all know this, he is so earnest and genuine and as far as I can tell has good relationships with everyone in the band (I know less about Taemin ( ... )

ugh I completely didn't mean to ignore you, sorry this is so late! and I'm just going to reply all out of order: in his old high school band, he wanted to be the vocalist, but the role was taken. idk lately I think his voice has really been used for these vocal gymnastics, like long and high notes, and sometimes it's distressing because he's talked about how his voice is being strained and needs rest but he doesn't get to, and how it's something you can't ever get back once it's gone. His lower register is so pretty and we hardly hear it these days ( ... )

I just realised I hadn't responded to this! I wasn't even expecting a reply lmao, I really did just dump this here and then like leave. I thought I'd heard that he wanted to be the main vocal but ah I'm glad it's true! Taeyeon said the same thing about her voice, and while their voices can obviously handle it, the repetition and constantly being one of the main vocals laying a stable foundation for every performance must be beyond exhausting. Yeah um, protecting the health of your artists is important, but the voice is an instrument and you have to take really good care of it and let it rest sometimes ( ... )
