YES THE COMMENT IS STILL HERE THANK YOU LJcounttheplanesDecember 18 2011, 08:53:13 UTC
ughhh oh my god I'm too tired to... say things but I love this post so much. I've never heard of that Naver post! That's really interesting, I think I'm going to look for the original and try to read the other comments
( ... )
ugh, yes :( Like he invites a variety of personalities, both leading and being led? and he's so present that it makes people feel like they have a hold on him; out of SHINee, I think he has the strongest relationship with his fans. I guess the upside is that it could possibly make him more "real" and less something to be objectified, but idk

nbd just replying to your comment three times!! Another thing I realised is that people tend to call him "Jonghyun-ah," like they're all familiar with him. It's possibly just an age thing, but I see it a lot on Korean message boards/fansite comments, like I feel like I might see a comment like, "oppa is so handsome," but whenever they use his name, it's "Jonghyun-ah" or "Jonghyunnie," which I see as fans feeling close to him irregardless of any real interaction, &c.
omg I love that you made this post!!! elapses and I were just talking about how much we love it when male idols interact with their male fans the other day and I brought up the second fancam you posted, because that's the only one of these that I'd seen. The first one is so sweet though a;slkjfasfd what a darling :3 I wish I had more helpful things to add to this but it just made me feel really happy to read it! I especially love this:
Jonghyun appears to occupy that space, detached from sexual orientation, where he can garner a lot of appreciation for his appearance (his body) and his singing. That's super interesting to me! Like, that it's "acceptable" for dudes to like him because he has a nice singing voice etc. so it's understandable that they would be his fan. In general I find it more interesting to hear about girls interacting with girl fans and boys interacting with boy fans (I think because it's less likely to be just about physical attraction, and in the case of girl idols it's less creepy [esp with bands like SNSD where being

aw yay, I'm glad! :') and yeah, I agree - it seems like an actual half, if not a majority, of SNSD fans are female; I don't know about other girl groups, but it seems about the same. There's definitely a different stigma attached to males liking boy groups, and I feel like a lot of Korea's fears/stigmas about homosexuality are directed toward men - almost like they don't recognise lesbians. Like Amber is dealt with really strangely, in my opinion; she's presented as being "like a guy" but her sexuality never seems to be questioned; she's still asked who her ideal male is, &c. And I would say there's definitely more male fans of "masculine" groups like 2PM and BEAST; Hyunseung of BEAST in particular has a lot of male fans, but I don't really know him well enough to definitively say why? But he's really sweet about acknowledging his male fans as well
( ... )
Yeah, I honestly think that SNSD's ~pretty girls next door~ appeal makes them equally appealing to women? Since so often they are marketed as being "nerdy" and "dorky" or whatever, and girls want to be as pretty as them but don't feel like... I don't know, threatened? Because they seem genuinely nice and silly and funny in their interviews and appearances. BUT IDK. And yes that makes sense to me! I mean Korean fandom culture doesn't make sense to me on either side of that though - like, why is it okay to have all these "pairings" (in both female and male groups) if homosexuality is not even acknowledged, much less accepted? I just don't understand!! I think that since Korean culture seems to be pretty male-dominated, it makes sense that there's more fear of men being gay since that is interpreted as going against the "alpha male"/masculinity ideal? I don't know though! But with girls it just... doesn't seem to come up as much, that's super interesting (and true) about Amber! It's weird that her masculine image is such a thing and they
( ... )
I read something about this once actually! Basically, the pairings are okay because they're fake - like homosexuality is basically something that's not real and "for fun" only, which is why there doesn't really seem to be that oh my god my ship reaction from Koreans when idols date. It also contributes to the whole delusion of idols not being actual human beings, but something for entertainment.
But yeah, that's a really good point about masculinity; it's just tied into the culture, along with conservative Confucian/Christian ideals. Korea also doesn't talk about homosexuality, so it's linked with all these myths and such, like Hong Suk-Chun talked about how he was asked if he wanted to be a girl, &c. so it's seen as even worse.
ajkdsf yes! ; ___ ; I love how Jonghyun always tells his fans to go to sleep when they're up when he is, because he keeps crazy hours hahaha :'( idk one of my favourite UFOs is a fan saying like, "It'll rain tomorrow, please bring an umbrella if you're going out~" and he replies, "I'll bring it" so cute T T
I don't know why, but I always get a feeling from Jonghyun and the rest of Shinee members excluding Minho (who seems to be in denial or refuse to acknowledge homoerotic relationship) that they are fairly open minded to having homosexual relationships. Honestly, I think Jonghyun wouldn't mind having guy for boyfriend and etc. Perhaps I'm being harsh on Minho, maybe he is open to that, but he seems on TV to be least comfortable when it comes to homosexuality and femininity.
I don't really see this as being the case? As counttheplanes mentioned above, in Korea, homosexuality isn't at all cognitively accessible; it's completely outside of the realm of rationality to even consider homosexuality as anything more than some kind of fiction, an extreme perversion of what is good and normal. I think it's difficult to say or assume what they think about homosexuality/queers, and personally I don't think I can really make that kind of judgement, because sexuality is fluid and the sexuality one portrays - that they all portray, because of what they do - is not at all a solid indicator of the sexuality one is
( ... )
He loves people openly and enjoys casual physical intimacy, just like Jonghyun does, but I don't think that's an indicator of sexual preference at all; these actions are usually directed towards males on Minho's part and he said he was honoured to have his first "scandal" to have been with Changmin (he was mistaken as Changmin's girlfriend). If his interactions with women are lacking, it's really only because he's not as close to any females, but in all honesty, you don't see a lot of direct, unstaged male/female interactions to begin with; it doesn't indicate much of anything. Also, I don't know of any instance where Minho spurned queer relationships?
I have to cut this comment short, but I'd be really interested if you would elaborate on your points! And thank you for commenting :)
you're awesome to be honest. i'm a fangirl of SHINee.. SHINee sure has a lot of fanboys too if u don't know. i don't think that liking the same sex of us can be called 'gay' or 'lesbian' so it's not a big problem :)
