Well, the nice thing is, out of all the things that people want to do, you can always do some free-lance writing in your spare time while pursuing a career in something else... plus, then you don't have to worry about trying to survive on just a writer's salary ;)

Don't let practicality take over until you absolutely have to. You'd be surprised how much you can make work. (I say start out with the marine biology, have a mid-life crisis and break into the film industry, and do some writing on the side all along :))
