My one dog likes to dig in the sheets at night, I always say to him, "Harry, are you trying to dig to China? I think they eat dogs in China" and laugh.

Some close friends of mine who are heavily involved in animal welfare retired to Costa Rica (took 9 dogs and 2 cats with them) and she describes the street dogs similar to your story of your aunts. She is also fascinated by the fact that the street dogs can come and go from most estblishments, especially churches.

She is taking classes to open a spay and neuter clinic in her own home (just had an addition built for this purpose) for the street dogs and the people who have dogs of thier own but cant or wont get vet care. The local newspaper keeps doing stories on her work. While it was a change for her to understand the culture of dogs in Costa Rica, she has found wonderful ways I believe to help those street dogs - people bring sick ones to her and she vets them, adopts them out. She also has strays 'fixed'.
