You get up at 5:30 to go work on a movie. All day you sweat and burn and act like a bureaucratic ass for a movie. Your parents remark they feel like you're using them as a hotel for the summer, not unlike your senior year of high school but with far less debauchery because you're too busy working on a movie. You get off at 9 pm from working on a ( Read more... )

I hope the road trip back will be enough rest, cause I'm leaving the internship the day before I come back : (

I won't get burned out on film. Just interning, hehe.

I think you realize that you overloaded yourself this summer. Remember that movies are about life. Even some stylized horror movie like ours is still a reflection on an aspect of life, or maybe it's a reflection of a reflection. If you listened to Dr. Casper gripe about postmodernism then you know what I'm talking about. My point being, film is meant to be an enhancement to life, not a substitute. Be careful because I don't want you to get too burned out on film and decide you just want to be a doctor instead. You're way too talented for that.

Word. We've discussed the whole "film is based on life, not a substitute for it" thing, I remember. I think my quasi-obsession with film probably explains why so much of my stuff is self-reflexive towards moviemaking (see Chaplin shooting the camera at the end of Farce). I often reference the structure that the art form is created in, because the process fascinates me. Nevertheless, I just really gotta get back to my roots and write a lot, something I did far more of in high school. I'm looking into doing a screenwriting major in lieu of pre-med, which, you're right, is just silly. I've always loved my father but I can't just live in the shadow of his "M.D." forever. In either case, at some point I need to touch base with myself again. But, as a side note on overloading myself, I might as well come out and tell you that, despite complaint, I'm usually happiest when I'm torching the candle at both ends and spread razor thin. Leeza will attest to this with great chagrin.

For the record, the reason I said I didn't want you to ever settle for just pre-med is because I don't think that's what you truly want. I know you know this and it's rather funny to write the phrase "settle for pre-med", as if it in itself isn't very ambitious and noteworthy. However, you feel my drift. And yes I understand how it must feel to have such a professionally accomplished dad... I get a little bit of that from my Lawyer dad. I think the need to constantly be doing something productive is a perfectionist, type A personality thing. I feel that too a lot, more so in high school though. But I always had a hard time explaining it to my parents, that I needed the stress that I seemed to always complain about. It gives passion and a sense of purpose. I agree, you should go back to your roots, so to speak. More writing, more personal investment in projects, all that great stuff. And yeah, screenwriting sounds cool, although I heard that it is so intensive that you have time for no other majors or minors. Plus, I thought ( ... )
