Well, sure, but actually I think it is good to have research on the matter. For one thing, some folks (we call them "rationalists") are much more easily convinced by research that's testable than research that's anecdotal. For another, it shows people that research into areas like these is even possible, which then helps to shatter some of the default assumptions that folks have had.
The sarcasm was less directed at the researchers and more at the fact that such research is necessary (for the reasons you stated). Rationalism and Empiricism come with their own significant limitations.
