Tradition states that a bottle in the $10-$20 range is typically appropriate. Do you know what your having for dinner? Typically red wine is served with red meat, while white wine goes more with fish or poultry. I would recommend you stay away from a White Zinfindel (the pink wine) as that's typically frowned upon in polite society.
However, knowing Lisa's dad, you could bring a $50 bottle and he might still be snobby about it.
If you're looking for specific vineyards, I'm not the best person to ask, cuz I have the pleasure/embarrassment of being overly fond of cheap wine. Ha. Andrew, who has better taste than me, likes a merlot mix made by Black Opal that typically garners positive response.
You might also consider bringing a bouquet to use as a centerpiece, either with or instead of the wine.
If you think they like spicy food, you might try a decent alsatian Gewurztraminer. It's a slightly sweet, slightly spicy white; and seems to be easy on the stomach for those with a sensitivity to wine. Just don't get domestic.
Ahem. As I just told Jonathan, my father loves wine. And he buys the expensive stuff and critiques it.
In other news, this is kind of a general party thing, with other people invited, and we're having hamburgers. And there will be Coronas in a cooler to drink.
...I think if your dad is a whine..er, wine conneseur(sp)...maybe you should bring something other than wine.
I think I'd bring cake. Or some dessert. But I'm a girl, and we can do whatever we want muahaha.
And...I didn't know white zinfindel was considered offensive. All I know is what I was told for working at Chili's. That it's a sweet dessert wine. I know a lot of people like it if they're not big wine fans I guess :-P
