Owen leant back in his chair and linked his fingers behind his head, surveying the Hub.
Gwen was on her phone wearing the expression that meant she was talking to Rhys; eyes lowered, gentle, secret smile pulling at her lips. Married life clearly suited her and Owen wished them both the best of luck.
He turned his attention to Jack, who was upstairs leaning over the balcony, looking down. He followed his line of sight and saw that Jack was watching Ianto over in his corner. Ianto’s sixth sense obviously kicked in and he turned to look back up at Jack. An easy smile crossed both their faces and Jack mouthed something at Ianto. Ianto’s smile became broader and he checked his watch before mouthing something back. From the look that crossed Jack’s face Owen was glad that he couldn’t lip read. Best avoid wither Jack’s office or the archives for a while then.
But, he’d never known Jack smile this much in all the time he’d known him. Not these real, genuine smiles anyway. And Ianto was like a different man, confident, happy, no longer looking like he was carrying a ton of weight on his shoulders.
And then Owen cast his glance to Toshiko. She was busy at her computer, seemingly engrossed in something or another he wouldn’t even pretend to understand. The sixth sense thing seemed to be spreading though because Tosh suddenly looked up and caught him looking at her. She gave him a quick, almost embarrassed grin and then turned back to her work. But the smile didn’t fade completely; it stayed there on her beautiful face and Owen hoped it would never leave. He would ask her out again tonight and spend another evening in the company of that smile.
He took a deep breath and realised a smile was dangerously close to his own lips. The three people that were the closest he had to family were all happy; had found partners that they could be themselves around and who demanded only as much as they could give. Gwen and Rhys fitted together and so did Jack and Ianto. And he…well he had finally had the blinkers torn from him and had noticed Tosh for who she really was and decided to stop being such an idiot and act on it. They were taking things slowly, but something fitted; already they worked.
Owen had to admit to himself that he was happy. He was pleased that his friends were happy, and Tosh made him happier than he thought he’d ever be again.
“Oi, Owen. Planning on doing any actual work today? Hey, is that a smile on your face?”
Jack’s voice interrupted his thoughts. Owen unlinked his fingers and brought his feet back to the floor, turning to his computer.
“Fuck off, Harkness.”
But he was buggered if he was going to let anyone else know.
