allieandra Becker was thrumming with nervous energy, but he kept himself strictly under control and mentally berated himself. He kept telling himself it was just Christmas; this time of year changed things. The halls were decked, stocking were hung; it was an illusion, nothing more. And as the decorations came down, the illusion would fall away.
Which is why he couldn’t let the feelings running through him effect him and certainly wouldn’t act on them.
But when Lester looked at him that way again, Becker’s heart hammered in his chest and he wants it to be true so much it hurts.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
James never had to look, he could taste it on the air. He’d known for a long time that Becker was attracted to him but it had taken him much longer to admit to himself that he felt the same.
However Becker was a member of his team, there was no way he could pursue anything with the other man.
But a week after Christmas, fate stole the decision from his hands. A catastrophic day, a near empty ARC and a good bottle of Scotch conspired to create a sweaty night of passion and promises destined to be broken.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A week had passed since their night together; an evening fuelled by fear, loneliness and damn good whisky. They had promised each other the world; words whispered between frantic kisses and desperate touches.
In the heat of emotions stretched to their limits and passions held in check for too long, they had given themselves to each other. Forever was never offered, but tomorrow was guaranteed and sealed as their bodies fit together.
But the silence that had descended upon them since that night was as cold as the coming of a new ice age and it chilled Becker to the core.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Lester tried to ignore his feelings as Becker went out of his way to ignore him. A chasm had opened up between them since the night they had spent together and Lester had no idea how to fix it.
But, as the silence got louder and the gulf between them became an abyss, Lester’s feelings became harder to ignore. No plans had been made, but over just a few hours Lester had built a future in his mind, constructed of dreams and hopes. And the silence had devastated them, raising them to the ground with flames of pain and disappointment.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Lester was bite as well as bark, but Becker could see that his shoulders slumped when he thought no one was looking. He looked tired and his skin had a paler pallor now.
And Becker noticed all this because he saw the same when he looked in the mirror.
He tried hard not to remember that it was him that had made the first move, worked to allay the other man’s fears and made the promises for tomorrow. It was time for him to swallow his pride and put right something that he isn’t even sure how it went wrong.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Lester paced his office. Everything he had feared, all the barriers he had built up before having them striped away, had been for this reason. The atmosphere in the ARC was thick and heavy with tension. And while no one knew the real reason, it wasn’t good for the team. Something needed to be done, the stalemate needed to be broken.
He needed to say something, but the time must be right.
But once again the decision was taken from his hands. Two anomalies split the team and Lester and Becker found themselves together, trapped alone on the wrong side.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Twenty-nine hours and 34 minutes later, the anomaly re-opened and a changed Becker and Lester stumbled back into the present.
Trapped in an unknown time with no way of knowing when they would return, focused both their minds, and whatever petty insecurities that had kept them apart all this time fell away.
As their team celebrated their safe return, Lester and Becker shared a quiet look; all the needed words already spoken. This time an agreeable silence spoke of promises to be kept, futures to be made and mistakes to be rectified. And a whole lifetime to do it in.
