Is Facebook Worth It Anymore?

Aug 16, 2019 22:22

I've been frozen out of my Facebook account because it's challenging my account name, "Jordan Bassior" -- which is not only the name I've used on that account for years, but actually is my name, and the one I use with my friends face-to-face ( Read more... )

Facebook is definitely not worth it; I get email notifications when there are posts from close friends, family, or communities that I follow, and sometimes I follow up on those. I never post.

I've moved my blogging to Dreamwidth, with automatic cross-posting to LJ. There are a few people who post only on LJ, and I have a permanent account, so there's no point in dropping it.

Hm. Well, if it was me, I'd be doing several things in response. The first thing would be to investigate the communications to verify whether it was actually Facebook sending them. It does sound rather... scammish, after all.

The next thing would be to forward a copy of it to Facebook Legal, reporting it as an apparent phishing/identity theft attempt. I would do this whether or not my investigations showed the attempt came from Facebook. If it appears that some scammer is using this as a scam attempt, well, that's something that Facebook should know about, as it will reflect badly on them... and they have the legal budget to retaliate, if they choose to do so. And if it's just Facebook trying to harvest that information for whatever purpose, well, it's a not-so-subtle poke in their collective eye.

And then, just because I tend to be rather vindictive myself, I would file a complaint, forwarding the communication as evidence, with the FBI - this is potentially identity theft, and as it goes through the internet, it's automatically a ( ... )

I'm on facebook because I have to be as an author. It lets me connect with my fans and helps me spread my brand (I don't take ads out on facebook anymore though, because they don't work well).

I'm also on MEWE. Larry Correia looks like he's moving there, because FB has been banning him because he's a hero of the Kosvian war against the Pinelanders and was talking smack about the Pinelander's sexual habits (yes, those are places that don't exist and he was joking with friends).

Mad Mike is starting to migrate over there as well. I think Facebook might be approaching the event that kills them.
