Thanks for asking about my job! I'll be shadowing an attorney and learning about the statutes relevant to patient rights at the Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn. I'll then be able to go in and advise patients who are mentally ill of their rights, and be able to observe the attorneys litigate on issues like right to refuse medication. I'll also be helping the attorneys investigate allegations of abuse at the hospital and doing some work on guardianships (where Mental Hygiene is appointed legal guardian for incapacitated individuals who's families cannot be guardians). This work is probably going to be more with senior citizens and developmentally disabled individuals.

I'm really excited that I'll be able to get out there and help people though I know it will be tough work. This was actually my first choice for the summer so I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm coming home the second week of April for spring break--we should hang out:-D
