[Anime] Anime TuftEars Might Like

Jul 10, 2017 21:12

Gwendel and I have been watching anime. Sometimes we see things that we say "Koogrr would like this," or "TuftEars might like this." Here are a few.

Oh -- totally off-topic, but on my list of "anime Gwendel and I saw recently we figure TuftEars might like":

GranBlue Fantasy: Basically a 12-episode advertisement for a JRPG, but a pretty good one. It has sky islands, airships, gorgeous scenery (Gwendel kept pausing to take screenshots), giant stompy robots (or golems, anyway), dragons (big and little), nice costume design, and did I mention airships? It's technically 13 episodes, but episode #13 is, IMHO, kind of an "omake" thing that I'm pretty sure isn't meant to be "canon" to the main story. (If you see it, I think you'll know what I mean pretty quickly.)

Restaurant to Another World: Gwendel has some of the books in the series that inspired this anime. The book series is done in an interesting style insofar as each chapter is told from the POV of a different character visiting a mysterious magical Earth restaurant that magically wanders off to alternate fantasy realities over the weekend, and caters to adventurers and dragons alike. The anime, on the other hand, seems to have decided to focus upon a bit character -- a female Tiefling essentially (this thing is full of newer-edition D&D tropes) -- so they can have a cute and marketable female star, and an excuse to insert gratuitous shower scenes and such (which Gwendel reports is out of character for the content in the original stories).

Despite my misgivings about such changes (and I've only seen episode 1), the premise is cute, and the artwork Gwendel showed me from the original books is simply adorable. (My favorites would be the scene of the red dragon lapping from a "little" (from her POV) cauldron of beef stew -- which they sort-of recreate in the first episode, though they make her BIGGER in the anime -- and an illustration of the CUTEST GATHERING OF DRAGONBORN/LIZARDFOLK EVAR. I wish I could share examples.)

I'm willing to give it a try.

Alice & Zoroku: Cute anime about ... well, it's probably best to go into it without much explanation, because half the fun is just trying to sort out WHAT IN THE WORLD is going on here. It gets strangely dark in parts, to the point where I seriously wonder who the intended audience is, but I think it's worth sticking with it. Episodes 1-12 are out, and I suspect there won't be another season.

#13, anime
