Car Problem

I could use some advice from all of you who can name the parts in the engine bay of a car. Bear in mind at this point that I have no idea at all what the parts under the bonnet are (by and large). Engines are an alien technology to me, where I turn a key and they start. As a software guy, this is very much a hardware problem.

I was changing a bulb earlier and happened to notice a bit of metal that looked loose (part A):

Unfortunately when I tested it, I discovered it wasn't loose. It wasn't attached at all. The mounts have all rusted through and the lower mount just isn't there any more. Here's part A removed:

So first question, what is it? I presume it's a heat shield of some sort. This is right at the front of the engine.

Follow-up question (which may help with the first question if you know about these things), what's the part underneath (part B):

Part B makes a Y shape, you can just see on the photo that where the Y meets, there is a thin crack. I don't know if the crack is just surface rust or more severe. So third question: any guesses if that's likely to be something important that's cracked and will it be bad later?

The car seems to be in working order, missing part aside.

Fourth and fifth questions:
Focus or Astra?
Low miles or low age?

car, hardware problem
