Know anyone with clue about hockey skate fit?

I'm having a ton of fun trying to learn hockey. But to be honest, in the 10 months I've been doing it I've spent 3 times as much time trying to find a way to get the boots stable and pain free underneath me. It's not a problem skating around for fun. For some reason once I start skating with hockey intensity I find myself in serious pain ( Read more... )

Have you tried talking to a podiatrist? You may need some orthotics specific to the boots and the sport.

Ah, pain... jeanvieve January 27 2015, 09:21:46 UTC
Heya! Chaz B sent me to you, as a recently new hockey player my own self.

I had pain in a couple other places around the foot/ankle area when I started skating. First was from wearing the wrong size, which I presume is not your case. That pain was just above the ankle along my shin.

The heel location sounds like something they called the "Bauer knob." I couldn't get Bauers to fit comfy, so I bought Reebok. I pulled out the crappy insoles and put in really nice ones, and got a punch out after I started to get some lovely bunions from the pressure. Cannot say enough good things about going in to the pro shop and getting more punch outs anywhere it hurts. Also re-baking.

Now, reading back it looks like you've tried a bunch of this, so the problem may very well be musculature, which pulls on the tendons oddly. Are you in the SF Bay area? If so, send a note to Ray Greer - Ray@flyinghandsmassage.com and let him know Jeannie sent you and says hi.

Do not give up! Giving up because it hurts is for soccer players.

So how did the boot size being wrong manifest as ankle pain along the shin? Were your boots too big or too small?

That's much where my pain is.

Too large. If it's just above the ankle bone on the outside, that's your largest ankle stabilizer muscle and it is a slacker.

Come to coffee club at the Bean Scene tomorrow (or some other Tue-Thu morning) and we can talk more.
We will be there at 7:30.

Chaz is appallingly bad at handing out invitations.

Did you mean -- If the boot is just above the ankle bone, or if the pain is just above the ankle bone? How does the muscle being a slacker playing into that?

I'm not much of a morning person. Or, more specifically, I am very much a late night person who routinely turns in around 2am so early morning meetings aren't likely things without planning :(

Pain location. It got so bad with me I drew a dotted line around the offending area and sent to another hockey-playing massage therapist of my acquaintance. She identified and sent stretches to improve over time. So draw a line and post the pic and I'll let you know if the same spot.

easy peasy with me jorhett February 1 2015, 20:00:28 UTC
Easy enough you don't need a picture from me. Reach down to your left foot and touch the bony protrusion sticking out just above your ankle. (everyone has one)

I have a nerve running right across the top of mine. That is what hurts.
