He has use of a tripod base walking stick, this enables him to walk slowly. I recall him saying that he would walk again during my first visit to him on the stroke ward; Promise fulfilled. That's great news - congrats! It may be slow upward progress, but it's upward, and with all the horror stories around, it's good to hear he's getting the support he needs.

Thanks for your thoughts. He tries to appreciate the progress he has made but at his age the recovery process is slow and frustrating.
