MASTERPOST Chapter 19: To Castiel, John Winchester is practically a mythical creature.
To Castiel, John Winchester is like a dragon. He's heard of him, he's seen documentation of him, but in the four years he's known Sam and Dean Winchester, he's never met him, so he might as well be a mythical creature.
He does know a lot about John though. The basics, he knew that he was currently 46 years old, had Dean at 25, Sam at 29, he apparently had darker hair like Sam, a strong built, good height to him, was an FBI agent that went on field missions, so Cas had to assume he was in excellent physical condition. He seemed very good to his children and he knew that Dean had this hero worship thing going on when it concerned his dad. Sam was a bit at odds with him, Castiel just assumed it was because they were too alike. But no, John Winchester was the only member of the family he hadn't met and he wasn't too sure if it was even going to happen soon. One of the reasons for that is whenever he would be in town, Castiel would do everything possible to not go over. He didn't want to disturb the little time they had with John.
It was a nice April day, the weather had held up from March and since he was forced to spend Easter at a special bible retreat next weekend (thanks Michael.), he decided to bring his Easter chocolates to the Winchester family today. He walked up the walkway he knew so well, skipped up the small steps of the patio and knocked on the door. He was expecting Dean or Sam to answer since Mary was usually at the hospital working, but sometimes he got Mary - but he was sure as hell not expecting this man! Castiel instantly recognized him - it was John Winchester!! Castiel stood there, looking up at the man, stunned. "Hello?" Castiel attempted to articulate words but nothing was coming out of his mouth. John chuckled, looking behind his shoulder "Does anybody know a small pretty boy with black hair and blue eyes?!" Castiel made a strangled noise.
Soon Sam came down to collect him and proper introductions were done. But Castiel couldn't stop apologizing, and then he apologized for apologizing. He was so desperate to make a good impression that he was ruining everything! This man was the father of his best friend AND his boyfriend and he was making a total ass out of himself! John chuckled again. "Why are you so nervous?" But before he could answer Dean came down the stairs, threw his arm around Castiel's shoulders and pulled him into a deep kiss and pulled back, smiling brightly at John. John lifted a brow. "Now I see why you were so nervous." and then he paused, smiling a bit "So, what are your intentions with my son?"
Apparently, since John was only here for a couple of days, they had decided to have Easter supper today and Mary, being Mary, insisted that Castiel joined them for the supper, insisting that he was family. The supper was wonderful and warm and so much better than the horrible family dinner Dean had to experience at his place. "So Castiel." stared John, Castiel instantly tensed up "Yes?" "What do you plan on doing after high school?" Castiel swallowed loudly, no idea why he was so nervous "I...I want to study library sciences." John blinked, then he smiled "That's rare to hear someone your age say! Good for you, it’s a field that needs good young minds." Castiel smiled brightly, this was so different then at home. "Castiel is a very smart boy, he's top of the class with Sam." explained Mary, refilling her drink. John smiled "Good, I'm glad to hear all the good things I heard about you are true. I don't think there's been a single conversation I've had with my boys in the last few years where your name wasn't dropped at one point. I'm glad I finally got the chance to meet you." Castiel couldn't stop smiling for the rest of the supper.
When it was time for Castiel to head back, he said goodbye to everyone and headed out. Once outside, John followed him "Castiel, wait." Castiel stopped, turning around towards the other "Yes? What is it?" John walked up to him, smiling a bit shyly "A just wanted to say thank you." Castiel blinked "What for?" "For being there for my boys when I couldn't be. I wasn't kidding back then, for four years your name is dropped in every conversation I've had with my family. You have a positive impact on them and I want to thank you. And don't ever hesitate for anything. Keep being good for boys." Castiel smiled brightly and nodded "I'll keep doing my very best!"
