Harry gently touched the cold skin and brushed his fingers across the blue lips as sobs once again racked his body as he looked upon the lifeless body of Draco. He had never planned on losing Draco this way. Even after they’d survived all the plots to kill each of them during the war. He’d thought that they were finally safe. That they could finally move on with their lives.
He blamed himself. It should have been him lying there dead, not Draco. The package had been marked for him, but Draco had thought it was a birthday present for him and had opened it. The package clearly stamped with “Handle with Care.”
Draco had brought the package into their den and said, “Aww Harry you bought me a present.”
Draco had set the package down on the table and opened it with the letter opener he used. Then all hell had broken loose. As soon as Draco had lifted the lid the package exploded sending shrapnel flying in all directions. Draco had caught most of it in the abdomen and chest. Draco looked at Harry who’d hit the ground immediately, with a look of utter surprise and pain on his face before falling to the ground.
Despite getting him to St. Mungos straight away there was nothing the healers could do. Shrapnel had torn his heart to shreds and along with it, Harry’s as well.
