Okay, I'm a nerd. I've just spent some hours researching fictional character's personality types and the archetypes they fit in.
The
Enneagram of Personality has some nice things to say about Kaiba and Jou! It's actually pretty interesting to read this and see what it has to say about their interaction and personalities. I found it quite useful when it comes to fanfiction writing. Also - good to keep characters IC!
Jounouchi is type 6 - the loyalist
"Sixes are reliable, hard-working, responsible, and trustworthy. Excellent "troubleshooters," they foresee problems and foster cooperation, but can also become defensive, evasive, and anxious-running on stress while complaining about it. They can be cautious and indecisive, but also reactive, defiant and rebellious. They typically have problems with self-doubt and suspicion. At their Best: internally stable and self-reliant, courageously championing themselves and others."
One very charmign point made by enneagram.net states that sixes indetify themselves as the 'underdog' . That did it for me! Also, though difficult to connect with people at first, having trust problems and often being raised in a bad environement, sixes are very loyal to those who prove themselves 'worthy' to them *g* (Yugi, anyone?) Also, instead of being focused on his fears, Jou icounterphobic - instead of running away, he take a "defiant stand against whatever he find threatening. This is the Six who takes on authority or who adopts a dare devil attitude towards physical danger".
(Jou is basically at his best. Through the anime, he learns to have confidence in his self and in others, gains qualities and friends he never had, and becomes someone who can be depended upon and who can trust his friends to be there for him. It's interesting notice characteristics present during his bad times, specially when he was a bully: someone who was sarcastic and violent to compensate his insecurities and loneliness. During their lowes phases, sixes can become panicked and develop an inferiority complex. Due to fear, they lash out in acts of violence, become hysteric and self-destructive. =D Dark fanfic ideas, anyone?)
Kaiba is type 3 - the achiever
This seems kinda obvious *g*
Seto is a type 3 in an average level - it means he has some personality traits to work on, obviously. Though not entirely bad, Seto could become "Self-accepting, inner-directed, and authentic, everything they seem to be. Modest and charitable, self-deprecatory humor and a fullness of heart emerge. Gentle and benevolent. "
(Hey, the site is saying that. Not me. For those of you who believed sweet Seto to be totally OOC... Give it a thought.)
For now, though, he's the kind that is "highly concerned with their performance, doing their job well, constantly driving self to achieve goals as if self-worth depends on it. Terrified of failure." He's better than he once was, though. Just thing about Season 0. The definition of "Untrustworthy, maliciously betraying or sabotaging people to triumph over them." applied perfectly to him! And not to mention his obsession with winning over Yugi, as it's a characteristinc trait of an unhealthy three being "obsessive about destroying whatever reminds them of their own shortcomings and failures."
Enneagram Type Three (the Achiever) with Enneagram Type Six (the Loyalist)
Now things get interesting ohohoho. The site (Enneagram Institute) forces you to register to view this page on relationships. It's free, but to save everyone the trouble:
What Each Type Brings to the Relationship
"Surprisingly, this is not a common pairing, although these two types can work very well as a team. On the positive side, Threes bring hard work, optimism, energy, a desire to communicate to and connect with people, and a feeling of unlimited potential both personally and in the relationship itself. Threes can bring an enormous sense of self-confidence and the hope of success that is assured-that this relationship is a winning team or that this couple is the best ever!"
(Even the website agrees with us 8D I don't think this paragraph accurately describes both of them, Seto not being the optimistic kind of three, yet I can see this 'team' vibe whenever Seto is forced to work together with Yugi and Jou. Kaiba and Jou have strenghts and weakness that complement each others, and I believe if they were to team up, in DM and everything else, they'd be epic.)
"Common goals bring them together-they are both practical and want to achieve tangible things in the world. Sixes bring grounding, industrious hard work, perseverance in difficult times and personal loyalty to the Three. Sixes provide warmth, support, and a great deal of practical good sense. Sixes can also bring a compassion for the downtrodden or the less fortunate in life. Threes can pick up on this compassionate quality in Sixes and learn to open their own hearts more deeply to the underprivileged and the unfortunate."
(Isn't this exactly what Kaiba is lacking? Jou is exactly as this paragraph describes him: even though he has to cope with his dad, his lack of money, and the trouble DM brings, he works hards through all of the trouble. Kaiba might not let it out, but he does value hard work. If only he knew Jou better, I'm sure he'd have a deep admiration for him. Not that he'd say it out loud, but!)
"Both believe in applying elbow grease toward goals, whether toward financial security or developing personal talents. In short, they are both doers. They foster equality and mutual respect for the different talents each brings and the shared interests they invest in. Threes help bolster the Six's confidence and develop their self-esteem. Sixes offer support to Threes without Threes feeling smothered. Sixes also help Threes to become part of something bigger than themselves-a church, a service organization, a political or spiritual group. Both become stronger individually and as a team by "finding themselves" through service and humble hard work. Respect for each other can grow as each continues to discover the other's good qualities. This can be a very enduring and successful couple as long as heart-centered values and deeper principles keeps them both grounded."
(Well, though Kaiba has the tendency to make Jou feel absolutely worthless, just imagine if his words were used to do good! Jou obviously values Kaiba's opinion, or else he wouldn't strive so hard to prove himself to him. And through all the teasing, Jou obviously grows as a duelist and as a person. And Kaiba learns to be a bit less of an ass with Yugi's gang. Though Yugi is someone who constantly bothers Kaiba with his need of Kaiba to be open, friendly and everything else, Kaiba doesn't have to be worried about this with Jou. Jou is more subtle. Like... Trying to punch him in the face *g* Certainly more entertaining than the friendship speeches.)
Potential Trouble Spots or Issues
"Ultimately, each has what the other needs, but unless their relationship is healthy and well stabilized, they can tend to bring out the worst characteristics in themselves and in each other. These two types have similar negative qualities in common: both can be competitive and become workaholics, both are looking externally for reassurance to make up for secret inferiority feelings and insecurity, both want to be socially accepted. Both can be conformists of various kinds, doing what is expected of them, and both avoid looking at their deeper feelings or discussing their emotions. Both Sixes and Threes have feelings, but they tend to put them aside in order to get the job done whatever it is. Their different coping styles can get on each other's nerves by reminding them of their own weak spots. Threes seem to be inflated and grandiose to Sixes; Sixes seem to be nervous and reactive loose cannons to Threes..
Sixes err on the side of caution, Threes on the side of too much ambition.
(DIDN'T THIS JUST DEFINE WHAT KAIBA AND JOU'S RELATIONSHIP IS ALL ABOUT?!)
Oh dear.
