Dear Yuletide Writer 2013
Dear Yuletide Author,
Thank you in advance, you're amazing! First of all don’t stress out. I’m sure I will love whatever you write so please relax and have fun! All optional details and prompts are only if you wanted any inspiration or clarification. Write the story that seems fun to you not the one that seems like a chore.
Blackadder
Edmund Blackadder
I love all the incarnations of Blackadder from goofy Prince Edmund to sharply cynical Captain Edmund of the trenches. The banter between Blackadder and his group of acquaintances, the cunning plans, the creeping sense of doom, all of these things are dearly loved about the source material but don’t feel pressured to replicate the show’s writing. Anything you want to write would be loved! Come up with your own cunning plan for Blackadder and his crew to enact, an internal monologue of Captain Edmund in the trenches, Queenie’s silly pranks and whims, whatever strikes your fancy go for it!
Gen or canon ships are great, but slash would be dearly loved for the pairings of Edmund I/Percy, Edmund II/Lord Percy, Edmund II/Lord Flashheart, Edmund III/Prince George, or Edmund IV/Kevin Darling (absolute favorite!). You could also do Lieutenant George/General Melchett slash if that appeals. I love Baldrick to pieces, but I’m not really into shipping him with any of the mains, though feel free to write the love story of a Baldrick and a Mrs. Baldrick-to-be.
I’m most familiar with Seasons 1-4, the Blackadder Christmas Carol, and Blackadder Back & Forth. The other specials I’m not as familiar with but you can include details from that if you like! You can also write about a Blackadder descendant in a period of history not covered by the show and specials. This is a series where AU possibilities are endless and I’d be happy with any of them. Blackadder of Roman occupied Britain? Go for it. Boarding school AU? Let’s do it. Blackadder III visiting France or the American colonies? Why not?
Murdoch Mysteries
George Crabtree
I love the whole cast of this series, but Crabtree is my absolute favorite. He’s earnest, open-minded, and adventurous. I’ve seen seasons 1-5, but not 6 and I’m not familiar with the book canon. Feel free to set your story pre-canon, any season, or an AU, whatever you like! As much as I like Emily Grace I don’t think she and George would suit each other romantically in the long run, I do like them as friends palling around and solving mysteries.
I’d prefer to see George shipped with another character or an OC, preferably a male character because there is so little slash for this fandom and considering his man-crushes I think it’d be sweet. I really loved his dynamic with Jimmy McLeod the First Nations tracker from S2E12 in particular, but that’s such a minor character that I don’t expect you to do anything with him so feel free to use another character or OC. If you’re not up to Crabtree m/m slash, I’d love to see a gen ensemble piece with the gang as long as the focus is on Crabtree. I do ship Murdoch/Ogden and the Brackenreids, so feel free to include them in the background.
If you’re looking for prompts how about Crabtree working on his novels, or a solo investigation gone awry? There’s also a lot to be done with pre-canon Crabtree, his childhood and how he entered the police force. How about a peek into the Crabtree family, either his biological mother or his adopted family and bevy of flower-named aunties? Would Crabtree ever leave the force to pursue a dream? Maybe a trip to New York or Nova Scotia to solve a mystery?
The Venture Brothers
Dermott Fictel, Hank Venture, Dean Venture, Brock Samson, & Rusty Venture
Anything in the fantastic wacky world of the Venture Brothers would be gold! I love the whole cast and their crazy adventures.
My only real request is I would prefer fic focusing on the Venture family and their allies. A lot of great fic has already been written about their enemies and especially the Mr. & Mrs. The Monarch. I've seen all the episodes including the specials, so feel free to incorporate any of the newer characters or revelations.
Feel free to set a story in any season - feel free to canon diverge and go AU if you’ve got a fun idea! I do really like the new direction and twists we’ve gotten in the fifth season so major bonus points if you expand on those.
I love how Hank and Dean have grown into different people with different interests. I miss Dr. Venture’s domesticity with Brock (that people outside the super-science/super villain scene assumed was a gay partnership and co-parenting). I love Billy and Pete trying to make it big even though it never quite works out. Augustus St. Cloud and Pi Wai stole every scene they were in and I loved every minute of it.
Notes on Pairings:
Gen is perfectly fine and happily welcomed considering the canon! I have a terrible love for Brock x Rusty slash and no it’s not really romantic, it’s domestic and comfortable yet prickly. I have a crack pairing of Orpheus x Rusty based on their interaction during the first Myra episode (hey Orpheus needs a new project and the Triad is dysfunctional on a GOOD day).
How would Nancy and Drew react to the Venture twins now that they’re so different? I adore Shore Leave x Al and St. Cloud x Pi Wai as well as Billy x Pete. Is Hank really as gay/bi as other characters have long assumed? I really love Hank x Dermott and Hank x LeTeur, but I won’t say no to different pairings. I don’t ship Hank and Dean romantically, but I do love their brotherly interactions.
These are just my rambling thoughts. Write whatever works for you, author! You like Venture Brothers so you already have excellent taste so I trust you implicitly!
Persuasion
Anne Elliot, Captain Frederick Wentworth
Persuasion makes my heart ache in all the best ways. I love the maturity and subtlety of the novel. It’s a novel of second chances and learning from one’s past. If you’re not up for re-reading the novel both the 1995 film and the 1997 TV film are excellent adaptations that are readily available. Anything you write would be loved!
Maybe a look into their first-time courting? Or how Anne and Lady Russell coped with the death of Lady Elliot? A missing scene from the novel or Wentworth’s POV of an event? You could also genswap one or both characters. How about the dashing female Captain Wentworth and a shy Elliot son? How would a same-sex (either m/m or f/f) courtship play out between these two? You could also explore the dynamic between the Elliot sisters, did Elizabeth and Anne bond at all during their scant years at boarding school? Has Mary always been demanding of attention or did it get worse over the years? What does the future hold for Anne and Captain Wentworth? Feel free to include as many characters from the novel or from other Austen novels as you like as long as the focus is either on Anne, Wentworth, or their relationship.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Akemi Homura, Sakura Kyouko, Miki Sayaka, Tomoe Mami
Madoka was a series that took a lot of twists and turns and opened up a ton of story possibilities considering Homura's magic power and the series' ending. Don't feel confined by using just the requested characters - any of the witches or magical girls including Madoka or the 'historical' magical girls would be interesting to read about! Some other things you could explore: who or what is Walpurga/Walpurgisnacht and what do non-magical people experience of it? What about Kyuubey's race? Are they acting together or are the ones on Earth rogue agents? Have fun and explore the magica universe as it pleases you!
For this fandom I really enjoy the different alternate pasts, presents, and futures that were implied by the series. Friendships and rivalries between the magical girls (and witches) of the series are also something you could explore if you didn’t want to write something really plotty. Femslash is more than okay, but I would prefer nothing explicit unless the characters were aged up to at least sixteen. Gen stories are also great. There aren’t really that many male characters in the cast, so het seems rather moot. IF you want to go the pairing route I enjoy Homura x Madoka, Kyouko x Sayaka, and Kyouko x Mami best, though Mami x Madoka is also appreciated. This is a universe where tragedy is pretty prevalent so if you want to go that route it’s okay even though my regular preference is for more upbeat stories.
General Likes & Dislikes
In general I really like:
- Stories that are generally upbeat or end on a positive note (Madoka Magica is exempt from this considering the canon)
- Fill in the blanks! Backstories, post-series speculative stories, or missing scene stories
- Character interactions, all of these fandoms have some great character dynamics
- AUs can be amazing
- Genre pastiches are fun as heck
- M/M, F/F, F/M, gen, & OT3s
- Alpha/Omega AUs, they are my new guilty pleasure
I generally dislike:
- Rape/Graphic violence/Suicide
- Non-canon character death
- Second person narrative
Any rating is okay, I'm more than fine with anything from G to NC-17 or AO3's General to Explicit rating. You can write smut or gen or anything in between. Sexually explicit content in a short story is fine too, author! Any pairings you want to write are awesome. If you have fun writing it I promise you I will enjoy reading it! I genuinely enjoy participating in Yuletide and I know I’ll adore whatever you choose to write.
In short, have fun! None of this was written to stress you out. If you have a story idea that seems fun to you, go for it! I have very eclectic reading tastes and enjoy many different styles and genres so do what inspires you!
