"real" women

i just saw a commercial for a reality dating show called "more to love" which features non-model thin women competing for the love of a successful 300+ pound man. the marketing for it is infuriating, notably for its propensity to describe these ladies as "real" women ( Read more... )

uh huh. i almost was cast on a weight-based reality show this year, and after watching one episode, i was THRILLED i didn't make the cut.

i'd rather just see a regular reality dating show with all sizes of women and no real mention of it, tbh. because it shouldn't be that big a deal. i'm a fat chick and my boyfriend is small. it's never been an issue for us. idgi, it's like society really thinks a fat girl can only belong with a fat guy or something. it's stupid.

which is probably exactly what would happen. "(fat girl) and i have a really great connection, but man, do i love how (skinny girl) looks in a bikini!"

Ugh...I was sickened by the concept of this show too (I wanted to write something, but then I didn't bother). Can't they have a show with "real" women of all sizes? This just made it seem like people were special or different because they were bigger...almost like they were freaks or something: "Ooh let's watch these unlovable freaks find love they couldn't get anywhere else!" WTF. Why do fat people need their own reality show? It's a weird social segregation thing.

yeah, i'm all for making the media portrayal of the "average american" to be actually more average. i just don't think this does it.

I haven't seen said commercial, but I think the point that they may be trying to make is that "real" (read: average) women don't weightwise look like those typically portrayed in the media. Therefore, they are insinuating that I at a size 1ish am not real. Guilty, I guess.

Yeah, so why not just have a dating show with all sizes? Are they, like, easing America in? I don't get it. But, then again, I am not real, so it doesn't matter.
