jox

for my gender bending friends

Jan 19, 2005 11:28

I'm writing a paper about As Nature Made Him and I have a question about terminology.

Someone who is now a woman, but who was born male is called a woman of transsexual experience? Let me know, I don't want to write what I don't mean.

i fucking love you hardcore.

yes, this is a woman of transsexual experience [if body changes are/were/will be involved] or a woman of transgender experience [if no body changes are/were/will be involved/desired] or a transwoman, if the person identifies as such.

...or just a woman. many transsexuals feel that once they are completely post transition and are known by everyone in their life as their preferred pronouns/name/gender, they no longer need the transsexual description at all.
by the same token, many trans people identiyf as a third sex, and consider their tranny-ness relevant no matter where they are in their transition.

Late responding to this because my computer is dying.

I've only recently started encountering the "of ts experience" phrase, and it still sounds as though it is trying too hard to be PC. So I basically agree with zestifyingagent. If someone is going through a full transition, I see know reason to qualify eir final sex/gender, unless I am specifically talking about the fact of transition (which I take it you are). Otherwise, I tend to fall back on MTF and FTM, which are explicit enough not to cause confusion.

the first person i've ever heard say "... of ts experience" identifies as such, and the only other people i've heard use it were part of the conversation when my friend originally said that. so i don't think he was trying to be pc - he was talking about himself in the way he felt comfortable. and yes, jox is talking about the fact of transition.

i wonder why i feel so defensive and angry about your comment. i'm gonna go take a couple breaths. later.
