So I think I agree with Adorno in that culture is hegemonic and totalitarian beyond the simplistic structures outlined in Marx. Culture is more than class, language, whatever, but also encompasses those things. Interpreted classically as modes of production of commodities I think what we deal with on the level of base or superstructure in Marx

omg, you have just reminded me of the program director at the radio station I used to DJ at. He'd get so upset at my playlists because occasionally I'd sneak in a lesser-heard Beatles or U2 B-side.

"Mindlessly popular" was his favorite catchphrase, and it meant that the music you played was not worthy of consideration and that you probably didn't deserve to have a radio show at all if you ever played any bands anyone, including him, had heard of.
