Wonderful! And I want some khagavar right now!coraldawnMay 7 2006, 19:54:13 UTC
Joyeee, this is so good! I love it! I love the set-up - new city in Persia, exotic foods that the average dour Macedonian is suspicious about, yearning for fresh roast boar, the host falling over himself to please the Great King! Then there are so many hilarious details in the first half - Euphemius' consternation as he is translating and staring away from the "bug-eyes" and at a knot in the wood, the Companions' trying to pass off their khagavar to each other, the two thousand pound fish, the rainbow-colored khagavar and the host's utter amazement at how Alexander digs into it

Thank YOU so very much for posting the challenge! And what a wonderful response, thank you thank you thank you! You know, the Beluga sturgeon really reaches 2000 pounds or over? I can't imagine how big that would be . . . When I posted in fanfiction.net I had to read it over several times to make sure the site didn't mess up the formatting (it's done that before), and along the way I made a few little changes here and there. I fixed the lj entry accordingly, too. Nothing major - except that I changed the line about Hephaestion's hair; with "flame" instead of "fire" I thought the rhythm sounded a little better. I hope that doesn't ruin it for you!!!
I liked that story .I have never seen nor tasted fish eggs but after reading this story I might try them once -I liked the way Alexander reacted to them too as well as hephaistion .
I've just read your fic on Fanfiction.net and now I find it here :) so I put my comment here ;) Your fic is very amusing and humorous. I can't write humorous fic, I'm more comfortable with sad or dreamily stories, but I like reading fic like yours :) Alexander watching the maps while Hephaestion is sleeping is a sweet moment. And BTW, your pig icon is so CUUUUUUUTE !
I'm glad you like the fic even though it's not your usual genre. I like your icon too - who's it by? (Looks like Renaissance era artist to me; reminds me of daVinci's and Raphael's sketches. . .)
It's the "head of a woman" by Leonardo da Vinci, a study for the two pictures now in London and in Paris, with the Vierge, the Child, two angels and saint John :) This study is kept in Italy, in Turin (my city) and I've just seen it :))
I'm especially glad you liked the line about Alexander treasuring the maps. I'm not sure I can come up with a sequel to this but a few other ideas did pop up, including something involving Alexander actually having the maps bound together and showing it to Hephaestion, who didn't think much of them when he made them and never expected to see the little doodles again. ^_^ Thank you so much for a lovely review, and letting me know which bits you liked in particular!

"But Alexander kept them separately, safe with his books. Someday he would have them bound into a book, too."
Also the idea, that Heph draws Alex those special-maps is incredible cute. After all those years they have still those tiny secrets to share.
"frantically concentrating their considerable strategic skills on the problem of getting rid of their fish eggs."
lol- that's wonderful!
such a beautiful, light story- it was a joy to read.
Though I would have liked to read about Heph's reaction to the letter the following morning.
